To add a driver’s license to Apple Wallet on an iPhone, open the “Wallet” app on your iPhone. Tap the “+” sign and tap “Driver’s License” from the options. To use a Colorado state identification card with Apple Wallet at a TSA checkpoint, residents can simply tap their iPhone or Apple Watch against a TSA identification scanner. Coloradans can now add their drivers license or state ID card to Colorado ID in Apple Wallet and use the app at selected Transportation Security Administration PreCheck security checkpoints at Denver International Airport. The Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles announced the apps rollout on Wednesday, offering it as a secure, digital version of the states issued drivers license or identification card.
Colorado has long supported a digital version of a state identification or drivers license on Colorados MyColorado app, but starting Nov. 9, the state now allows residents to add their IDs to Apples wallet app on their iPhones or Apple Watches. The Colorado Department of Revenue announced on Wednesday that citizens can add their drivers license or state ID to Apple Wallet on their iPhones and Apple Watches. The Maryland Department of Transportation has launched the Maryland Mobile ID on Apple Wallet, meaning that anyone who has an Apple Wallet can carry around a digital version of their state identification.
Apple has officially launched digital state identification cards into its iPhone Wallet app, starting with ones issued by Arizona and Maryland. Below, I am going to take you through what states are currently supporting adding your ID card to Apples Wallet app, how to add your own ID card to the iPhone, and ultimately, how and when you might be able to use the digitalized version of your ID.

Apple Wallet has added a function allowing users to add an ID to their account, which can be used to prove the users identity or license rather than carrying around a physical card. While the new feature allows users to add driver licenses and state identification cards to Apples convenient digital wallet, not every state considers such identification storage reliable. Apples website has previously said that the IDs within the Wallet app will also be usable in some retailers and venues going forward.
The only current use case is to be used at TSA checkpoints in airports equipped with required readers, according to the state DMVs website dedicated to adding them.
Apple boasts that selected airports already have special screening lines equipped with readers capable of processing Apple Watch or iPhone ID, and it heavily emphasizes the safety of the feature, insisting users will not have to unlock, display, or surrender the device in order to show an identification card. As more states begin implementing digital IDs, TSA will be adding compatible identity-verification machines to airports across the country, the TSA said in a recent announcement. Apple is also working aggressively with several more states on digital ID adoption.
Currently, Apple expects that Georgia will be the next state to follow Arizonas example and adopt its Wallet ID functionality. In September, Apple announced that Arizona and Georgia would be the first states to adopt support for Wallet apps, with Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah coming soon after.
Right now, the driver license functionality of Apple Wallet is available in only Arizona, but soon, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, and Utah will be joining the states digital drivers license and identification programs. Arizona and Georgia are the first two states to adopt the drivers license storage feature, according to Apple, and others are expected to follow suit shortly. Colorado is the third state to adopt IDs within the wallet, according to Colorados Department of Motor Vehicles.
Then, swipe to the bottom, tap on Wallet and Apple Pay, and look for your license or ID listed below Other Cards on Your Phone. When viewing your Colorado drivers license, you can tap on the I icon followed by “Drivers License Info” to see all of the same info you have in your current ID, including the thumbnail photo for your scary drivers license. Next, tap the Continue With Face ID, which sends your selfie and ID info to the authorities in your state.
It should take a few minutes for your states MVD to verify your ID, but when it does, your ID is visible on your wallet app. You will have to take a photo of your face, then using Face ID with the wallet app, you need to make a couple movements to properly identify yourself.

If you are using accessibility features, rather than having Face ID or Touch ID turned on, you can use a passcode for setup, then use a license or ID. If you have an iPhone 8 or newer, you will also have to have Face ID or Touch ID turned on, Apple ID with Two-Factor Authentication turned on, a license or ID from a participating state, and the device region set to United States, according to details mentioned in Apples support page. Note that you will need either an iPhone 8 or newer (running iOS 15.4 or higher) or an Apple Watch Series 4 or higher (running WatchOS 8.4 or higher) in order to add digital IDs to your device.
