Airpods Microphone Not Working
Reconnecting your AirPods to your device is another quick and simple solution for the broken microphone on your AirPods. Put your AirPods back in their case, seal the lid, then remove them again and insert them into your ears to accomplish this. Your AirPods will be disconnected and then reconnected to your smartphone.
If you tried all the methods mentioned above, but your AirPods mic still does not work, then this could be because your iPhone is connected incorrectly. Issues with your iPhones system software could be another issue preventing the AirPods microphone from working properly. Sometimes, AirPods can function with low battery, but your AirPods mic might stop working.
The AirPods are generally solid, but sometimes it seems like the mic stops working. It is frustrating when the mic on an AirPod stops working, especially if you are the type who takes many calls via AirPod. In some cases, your built-in Bluetooth adapter cannot handle AirPods, and therefore, your AirPods microphone cannot function normally.
When your iOS or Android device is running on an older OS, your Air Pods microphone might not work. Multiple Bluetooth devices connected to your phone or computer, mostly audio devices, can interfere with the microphone of the AirPods. Your computer will not record your AirPods voice inputs if either the microphones system-wide access or application-specific access is turned off.
If your AirPods are not working within the voice and video-conferencing apps, check that the mic is not muted. For example, if you are using Zoom, go into Settings, choose “Audio,” and choose your AirPods as the default mic.
Go to the App Settings, and select the AirPods as your default mic. Either of these two settings will use only the microphones on either your left or right AirPod. Check your AirPods active mic settings to see if it is configured to use a mic.

Make sure the AirPods with no microphones are not configured to only use a single mic, in case one is not working. For best results, allow non-working AirPods to automatically switch microphones, which may prevent problems, such as when one of your AirPods batteries is almost or already dead.

In particular, if an AirPod is trying to use a mic on just one earbud, but that earbud is already dead, that might look like there is a major issue. Sometimes, the mic being down is not the AirPods fault at all — it is the phones that have to be fixed. If you are having issues with a mic in just one AirPod (for example, your right AirPods mic works perfectly, but the left one does not), then it is possible the issue is within the settings for your AirPods.
Sometimes, just rebooting the device that you are trying to pair the AirPods to may be the answer for how to repair your AirPods mic. Removing and reconnecting your AirPods to a device will reset their settings and fix the connection or audio issues. To make sure AirPods are working correctly, you can reattach them after turning AirPods off, and then on again.

Before doing anything else, pop open your AirPods case by holding them near your iPhone and checking for charging. Check the amount of charge remaining in the AirPods by opening up its case and holding the AirPods near your device. To check your battery levels, put your AirPods into their charging case (if using the AirPods Original or Pro), open the cover, and hold the case near your iPhone or iPad.
Low battery levels in your mobile device may affect the performance of your AirPods as well, so make sure you are charging your mobile device prior to using your AirPods. While we are at the charging of AirPods, you are better off charging them all the way to the top, and checking them out once more. Try charging the AirPods and see if this fixes the mic issues.

To get to microphone settings on the AirPods, you will need to plug them into a compatible iOS device, then you will be able to access the settings menu. You can also access AirPods settings straight from the Settings page, as long as you are already connected. If your device does not connect automatically with the AirPods, go into its Bluetooth settings and manually connect AirPods.
Now, within the Bluetooth options, you will see connected devices, including your AirPods. From there, we are going to click the Bluetooth settings, and find your Airpods under the pairing devices dropdown.
For Windows, head into Settings > Bluetooth and Devices, then choose the Connect button under the Airpod. Go to Windows Settings, choose Bluetooth & devices, and find your AirPods. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings and choose Bluetooth > Info icon next to Apples AirPods name > Microphone, and toggle Automatically Switch AirPods to On.
If you are having problems using the AirPods microphone feature in a particular app, open your apps mic settings and choose your AirPods from the list of devices available. Select AirPods Hands-Free as your Playback Device when using Windows apps.
Then, choose Disable Devices, and confirm to disable the AirPods stereo device. Next, select Device Properties and use the sliders to increase the volume of your AirPods microphone input. Set AirPods to your default input device, then run the Troubleshooting audio input.
The AirPods Pro mic may not work in a Windows computer if your computers Windows/drivers or the AirPods firmware is not up to date. The Airpods Pro mic might not work if its firmware or the devices Windows/drivers are outdated, because this could cause an incompatibility between devices (i.e., PC and AirPods). Apples AirPods can function as a microphone, however, at times, the mic function stops working correctly for seemingly random reasons.
Unfortunately, while it is not hard to fix, it is not always clear what the fix is really – any number of issues could cause the microphone on your AirPods to stop working. If the mic is not working on one ear, there may be an issue with the settings.

AirPods don’t feature a Liquid Damage Indicator like iPhones do. Try attaching your AirPods to your iPhone after letting them air dry for a day or two to determine if they are broken. To ensure that your headphones are not causing your audio to be distorted, test them out.

Then, try cleaning them. A cotton swab should first be softly misted with rubbing alcohol; do not allow it become too saturated. Dab the bottom of the AirPods’ microphone openings to get rid of any dust. Then, gently remove any dirt with a toothpick or a pair of tweezers.
