The ASUS Chromebook Flip CX5 in 16 inches boasts a fresh appearance and features.

With support for both Linux and Android apps, and compatibility for cloud-based game services and browser-based emulators, the Chromebook has a vast library of games to play. Ultimately, although Chromebooks are not designed specifically for video games, you can play games easily on Chrome OS-based notebooks. Thanks to the access to Googles Play store and the Chrome Web browser, there are plenty of games to play on Chromebooks. If you are looking for gaming on a computer, even when on the move, then these Chromebooks are going to fit the bill.

You can install a small number of Linux games right onto a Chromebook, as long as you are willing to put in a little legwork. Both options are explained in our How To Install Linux On Chromebook guide, and any will allow you access to Steam and GOGs catalogs of Linux games (opens in a new window). You can run Android apps from the Google Play store, install Linux apps, and even escape to play games (in beta) in some higher-end Chromebook models. We covered a few options to enjoy games on Chromebooks, from playing Pac-Man in your browser to popular games on Android phones, and from streaming via Google Stadia to installing the Linux OS just for games.

In the end, it is worth noting that even the best Chromebooks are no match for the bargains in our selection for best budget gaming laptops. Whether you are looking for a high-end, powerhouse gaming Chromebook, or a more affordable, more basic option, there is definitely a Chromebook that is ideal for your unique gaming needs.

A gaming laptop Chromebook is an excellent choice for gamers looking to play while on the move, and a desktop gaming Chromebook may be an excellent option for those looking to expand on an existing gaming desktop configuration. If you are a hardcore gamer, a Chromebook desktop might be a better choice. If you are looking to pick up an Acer Chromebook 514 to play Steam games, then you are going to need to look at it. The Acer Spin 13 is an excellent, well-built gaming Chromebook, featuring a hardshell shell and plenty of horsepower.

The Acer Spin 713 is the best Chromebook for gaming, thanks to its Intel Xe dGPU, while Lenovos ThinkPad C13 Yoga offers powerful integrated AMD Ryzen 5 graphics. Google outfits the Acer Chromebook 713 with several different chipsets, but if you need the best gaming performance, we highly recommend you spring for the Core i5 variant. Specifications vary between notebooks, and most Chromebooks ship with Intel-branded graphics cards. Because games demand plenty of processor and GPU horsepower, Steam on Chrome requires a Core i5 or Core i7 11th-generation Intel CPU with an Intel Iris Xe integrated graphics and at least 8GB of RAM–and these are relatively high-end components for a Chromebook.

The built-in Intel 10th Gen Core i3-10110U processor and 8GB of system memory make sure that this HP 2-in-1 Chromebook is well-suited to multitasking. While not the flashiest compared with gaming laptops running Windows, this Chromebook is powered by an 11th Generation Core i5-1135G7 from Intel, with a maximum of 8GB RAM and 128GB of storage.

The real question about this laptop, however, is whether or not it really offers a better experience for gaming in the cloud compared to other options, including other Chromebooks. Lenovos superb Chromebook Duet 5 might not be the most powerful option, and you cannot test Steam Alpha, but that does not mean that you cannot use it to play games.

It is one of the best Chrome tablets you can buy, and the fact Lenovo includes the keyboard cover for free helps it double as a surprisingly capable 2-in-1 Chromebook. If you want a Chromebook that is superportable, yet still super-versatile — and also comes with a stylus — the Spin 713 from Acer fits the bill pretty well. In a market where the major differences between Chromebooks at this price point come down to their screens, and perhaps the included stylus, Acer sets itself apart by making a cheap laptop that is great at just about everything.

While many Chromebooks are a twist on a classic 13-inch laptop, the first wave of Chromebooks designed specifically for cloud gaming feature larger, higher-resolution screens with faster refresh rates, keyboards that are ghost-proof, powerful processors, and some software tweaks that better pair with cloud gaming services such as GeForce Now. Chromebooks expressly for cloud gaming are expected to launch in late October, but I had the opportunity to test-drive the pre-production build of the Acers Chromebook 516 GE. Earlier this week, Google and hardware partners ASUS, Acer, and Lenovo announced a somewhat surprising initiative to create Chromebooks expressly for cloud gaming.

While the sheer number of gaming Chromebooks out there to choose from can be intimidating, it is also a fantastic opportunity to find the perfect gaming device for your personal needs. It is cloud-gaming services such as Nvidia GeForce Now, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Amazon Luna (sorry, Stadia) that truly do make it possible to convert any decent Chromebook into a part-time gaming laptop, however. You have to imagine, at least up until a couple weeks ago, there were plans to offer several months of Pro Access of their own cloud gaming service for no additional charge on Chromebooks designed to play games on the cloud, rather than on GeForce Now or Amazon Luna. Chromebooks designed for cloud gaming might provide a decent entry point for people intrigued by the idea of cloud gaming – though one of the main sales points for cloud gaming is that it would run on pretty much any modern device.

With the Acer Chromebook 713, you will have enough juice to tackle Steam games, while also being able to remain productive or boot up some Android games whenever the time comes.
