You can adjust the brightness of your MacBook by doing some changes in the settings. All you need to do is choose the Apple menu, click on the system settings, then click on the display option in the slides bar. You may adjust the brightness slider left or right to increase or decrease the brightness.

For newer Macs, adjust the screen brightness using F1 and F2 keys, which have luminosity icons engraved on them. If you would like to adjust your Macs volume or brightness in-between those levels, simply hold Option+Shift when making an adjustment. You can do this same type of fine-tuning while you are also changing the Macs volume levels, which provides gradual control as well via incremental adjustments.

The incremental adjustment allows you to set screen brightness levels precisely, offering a huge amount of control on how bright or dark you want the Macs display. Now, you can easily adjust your Mac screens brightness using the keyboard, or accessing the system preferences. Now, whenever you want more precise adjustments for volume and screen brightness, you can tap the Control Center.

Clicking on the Control Center icon at the top-right of your screen moves a display slider to adjust brightness. Moving the slider on the bottom of the window left or right changes your displays brightness. To change your screens brightness, click on the System menu at the right side of the top panel, and adjust your screens brightness slider to whatever value you would like to use.

To manually adjust auto-adjusted brightness, go to System Preferences > Display > Display Panel using the Brightness Slider, or use the appropriate function keys or the Touch Bar on the keyboard. If you have multiple screens, or if you prefer using the slider, you can accurately adjust brightness on the Macs connected displays using the System Preferences, simply go to the display preferences panel, and in the Display tab, adjust the slider to the desired brightness level. You can adjust your Macs Display brightness to your desired level, and this option adjusts your displays brightness so that it is a little darker than you chose.

For the Mac, there is not an immediate shortcut for controlling screen brightness on Mac, but we can adjust this in System Settings in the Display settings of Mac. Unlike in Windows, here, you cannot customize exactly what Display Brightness levels your MacBook uses while it is connected and disconnected. Your MacBook can change the screen brightness automatically when it is running on battery, dimming your display when you are running on battery, and making it brighter when plugged in.

Even when turned off, Enable your MacBook to dim your display while on battery power, as long as you enable the Slightly Dim Display While On Battery Power option. Creating changes in your power adapter and Ambient Light must turn off your Macbooks auto-brightness options. If you already cleared the boxes to the power adapter and brightness, then Mac will not dim the display until after sleep.

You will find the Brightness Adjust keys on the Macs keyboard, whether you are using a MacBook or Mac desktop that has the Apple Keyboard. The keys on your keyboard will do nothing, and you will not have the brightness slider on your System Preferences window, if you are using an external display that is not made by Apple.

You can configure custom keyboard shortcuts in the Keyboard section of the Settings (the app uses the Apple Media keys by default). Recent MacBook Pro and Air models feature an excellent keyboard, which allows quick adjustments of the systems volume as well as the brightness of both your display and backlit keyboard.

If you are using Macs, F4 is typically used to perform system functions, such as opening the Launchpad app or changing screen brightness. Commonly found on laptop keyboards, the Fn key on the Mac is used for controlling hardware functions, like the brightness of the screen and speaker volume. If you would like to use the F4 key to play and pause audio in MAXQDA for Mac, you can find the option for that under System Preferences > Keyboard.

There is also an option to manage brightness on all connected displays at once, which is activated by default using a key combo in conjunction with Command modifier. ExternalDisplayBrightness is a little utility that lets you change the brightness of external displays attached to your Mac using keyboard shortcuts, much like how you change the brightness of your built-in displays on your Macbook. If you are using an external display with Mac integration–such as Apples Display or the LG UltraFine–then you should have no problem changing the brightness, the same way that you do it on the main display.

Next, you will want to figure out how to turn up your Macs brightness using its default settings. Oh, and if you would like to compare your Macs brightness presets with Vivid, enable split screen. From there, you can turn a Mac app called Vivid on and off in your macOS menu bar, and use the regular Brightness keys to adjust the brightness beyond the levels that Apple offers out-of-the-box.

If you have constant changes of light around you, this feature might bother you, since the Macs automatically adjust the brightness. Macs that have built-in ambient light sensors can track light levels around them and automatically adjust display brightness levels accordingly. Macs come equipped with an integrated Auto-Brightness function, which adjusts display and keyboard luminosity to match the ambient light.

Your Mac incorporates an ambient light sensing system under the speaker grille, which automatically adjusts screen brightness to match available light. You can turn on reading brightness from your display under app preferences, but you do so at your own risk. Go into system preferences, or System Settings (if on Ventura), select Displays, and check whether you can control the brightness of external displays. Use the keyboard or a slider from your apps menu (the Brightness symbol from your MacOS menu bar, like the one shown on the screenshot above) to manage the brightness of the display.

Click on the Control Center icon in Macs menu at the top>and look at the Display brightness panel to use the mouse to toggle screen brightness. You will notice the brightness increases or decreases in smaller increments compared to when brightness is adjusted without Shift-Option modifier. When you press those brightness buttons, the levels are adjusted by one-off increments from 0 to 16. Once you have opened the app, tapping on the Brightness (F2) key while display brightness is already maxed out shows the second brightness panel beneath the system panel, representing expanded brightness that is available through the Vivid app, providing an additional 10 degrees of brightness, which translates to the XDR levels.

While small manual adjustments can be made, there is no way to move past the default brightness level — it may be too low for your tastes.

Why is my Mac brightness so low?

Verify that the display’s brightness is not off. To check or change the brightness level, use the increase brightness key. For your Mac to automatically adjust the brightness based on the current ambient lighting conditions, turn on the ambient light sensor.

How do I turn up the brightness on my Mac even more?

Set the display brightness to one by using the brightness slider in the macOS Control Center, the brightness slider on the keyboard or Touch Bar of your Mac, or both (at zero, it goes black). Open QuickShade now, and then click the sun icon that appears in the navigation bar. Set your comfort level on the slider.

How does F11 and F12 adjust brightness?

The arrow keys or the top of your keyboard may have the brightness function keys. To change the screen’s brightness, for instance, hold Fn down while pressing F11 or F12 on the Dell XPS laptop keyboard (seen below). On some laptops, the brightness control keys are all by themselves.
