There are three ways you can plug a DualShock 4 into your MacBook; through Bluetooth, a charging cable included in the box with the console, and an Adapter. You cannot directly plug an Xbox into the MacBook using the HDMI cable, like you can with the other laptop versions. Connecting MacBook Pro or MacBook with an Xbox is pretty involved because of compatibility issues that do not allow for a direct connection using an HDMI cable. The ideal alternative is gaming laptops, and if you own a MacBook or a Mac Pro, you might be wondering whether or not you can use an HDMI connection to plug it into your Xbox.

You can play an Xbox game on a laptop using an HDMI cable, provided that your laptop supports the functionality and has the appropriate hardware. For example, you could install Microsoft Windows on a Mac and play an Xbox game using Windows, or you could purchase an adapter to connect your console. In addition to using adaptor cables, you can install the Microsoft Windows operating system or use software that allows Xbox games to be streamed.

You can also stream games from an Xbox console to your Windows 10 desktop, but you will need to have a consistent Internet connection. With Windows 10, you can stream Xbox games to a computer in the same network, but there is no official Mac support.

You can play Xbox One games on a Mac using an app that lets you stream Xbox games to a Mac, much as Windows users can stream their Windows games to their Mac. With third-party game controller support coming with MacOS Catalina (10.15), we are now able to plug in most specific game controllers to our Mac. Previously, there was no official Mac support and no Mac on the PC to play controllers such as the Xbox, PS4 controllers, etc.

If you are not comfortable with using a keyboard and mouse control on your Mac for gaming, then you could instead use the Xbox controller or the PS4 controller. You can also use an Xbox controller with any iOS device, and an Xbox controller will work with any games with support controllers. Once such a controller is paired to a Mac, you will be able to use it with games that support controllers, like some games on Steam, NVIDIA Geforce Now, Apple Arcade, and potentially dozens of others.

If an Xbox controller uses the USB-A port, then you will have to use a USB-A to USB-C adapter to plug it into the USB-C/Thunderbolt ports of your Mac. While the micro-SD-to-USB option is not quite as straightforward as the above methods, you can still connect a non-Bluetooth controller to most Macs. If you do not have a Bluetooth-capable device, you might be wondering whether it is possible to use the Micro-SD to USB option to connect two devices.

Using the dongle or USB wire might not be supported in macOS — you might need to fall back on the same technique described for XBox 360 controllers (I tried using the USB wire with that technique, and it worked). If your controller does not have Bluetooth, you cannot do anything more; you cannot use the Xbox Wireless Adapter, since that works for Windows PCs only. Plan on connecting over Bluetooth, as described in Bluetooth instructions above, once MacOS gets the driver updates to make it compatible. You really can use the Xbox One controller with Mac, but you need to wire it up with microUSB cables – wireless is not possible.

You just have to plug the Xbox One controller into the Mac, which can be done by turning Bluetooth on in the Mac through the system preferences. Other console controllers can also be connected to a Mac over Bluetooth — we talked about this in our How To Improve Your Gaming Experience On The Mac post. If you have any spare PlayStation 4 or Xbox One controllers lying around your home, connecting them to a MacBook would definitely make them useful.

It is actually pretty easy to hook up your Xbox or PS4 controllers to a MacBook Pro, iMac, or MacBook Air using Bluetooth–no need to download drivers or use dongles. PlayStation has created a USB device for connecting controllers wirelessly…no Bluetooth required. If you are one of those users that would prefer using their controller when gaming on a Mac, you will be aware it is incredibly simple to plug it into your Mac.

If your Mac is connected to the Internet and has an AirPort card installed, you can share the Internet connection of the Mac with the Xbox gamepad. If you would like to play games on your Mac without direct connectivity, you can choose Xbox Cloud Gaming or Video Capture Card options. Fortunately, there are a few alternatives that may work, such as using Thunderbolt or a MiniDisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter, or using Xbox Cloud to cast, as long as you have a solid Internet connection and the appropriate cables.

The one thing that may make things better is connecting your controllers to the Mac – especially if you are playing Xbox games or other console games. You will have to plug an Xbox One controller into macOS using the microUSB cable (open in new tab), which unfortunately is not included. As per the Apple Support page for connecting wireless controllers, Apple and Xbox are working together to build support for Bluetooth compatibility between Xbox Series X/S consoles and macOS. You can also connect a Mac to a Microsoft Xbox outside of the house, though that requires some simple manual changes to your networking setup, explained in the app is user guide called OneCast.

You can use a free app called Controlly that allows you to connect your Playstation or XBox controllers easily to your Mac. You know, there is a bit of an irony in using a Microsoft peripheral with an Apple device. I have actually ended up getting an XBox Elite controller, and more recently, the XBox Elite 2 controller.

The opposite end of the tiny display line should be connected to the matching connector on your converter box. Can I use my MacBook as a monitor with HDMI?

An HDMI input can be physically added to the MacBook display so that it can show the image from an HDMI output. There are many affordable HDMI capture devices available on the market. Even if they are inexpensive, it will probably be less expensive to simply get a TV or monitor with an HDMI port.
