The main difference between the i5 and i7 macbook pro is the processor. The i5 has a 2.3GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, while the i7 has a 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor. This means that the i7 is faster and can handle more demanding tasks than the i5.

Among the Intel Macs, you will typically find CPUs that are Dual-Core, Quad-Core, 6 core, 8 core, and 10 core, whereas the Mac Pro offers Xeon CPUs that are 8, 12, 16, 24, or 28 Cores. There is no Core i5 desktop CPU with hyperthreading, and there is only one rarely seen desktop Core i5 chip with just two cores (the lower-power i5-3470T), drawing mostly clear lines between the Core i5 and Core i7 product lines: On desktop, dual-core CPUs are a market segment left for the Core i3, Pentium, and Celeron chips.

Mobile Core i7 CPUs may be four-core chips — like those found in the $799 Mac Mini — but they may also be dual-core CPUs with Hyper-threading enabled, making them much less of an upgrade than their Core i5 counterparts. With the new generations, CPUs are available in hybrids of performance and efficiency cores, giving you unique setups such as 12 cores or 8P+4E CPUs, meaning eight performance cores and four efficiency cores — although only high-end models in the K-series and the i7 and i9 models have the efficiency cores. The difference between performance cores and efficiency cores is that the efficiency cores are energy-saving, whereas performance cores can be used for more intensive tasks. The performance cores feature higher base clock speeds, larger local caches, wider memory lanes, and, importantly, they have Hyperthreading enabled.

Hyperthreading is what sets the best Intel CPUs apart, allowing a CPU to do double the amount of calculations relative to the core count. Hyper-threading allows a processor to process double as many streams as it has cores, tricking the software into thinking it has double as many cores. Hyperthreading (or threading) makes the computer think it has twice the number of cores, and helps it process more tasks or instruction streams at once. Intels hyperthreading uses multithreading to trick operating systems and applications into thinking a CPU has more cores than it does.

Most processor performance can be defined by how many cores it has. Besides core count, there are also other features, such as threads, that you need to take into account before choosing a CPU. Since each Core has similar capabilities when it comes to GHz, the number of cores on your Mac is essentially a multiple for the computing power. Two i5 CPUs have 12 cores and 16 threads in total, the only difference being in maximum frequencies for Iris Xe graphics. Intels on-board graphics are featured on both CPUs, though, predictably, the 12th-generation Core i7 from Intel contains a more powerful graphics core. Core i5 and i7 are middle-tier chips, fulfilling a role for consumers that require a lot of processing power and are willing to pay a fair price for such technology.

This line of Intel CPUs was introduced way back in 2008, and currently, Apple computers use i5 and i7 chips exclusively using Haswell, with the exception of the Mac Pro, which uses Ivy Bridge. CPU-wise, Apple may go just as fast as these two CPUs. The primary difference in the i5 Intel CPUs and i7 is faster CPU performance in the i7 models. The dual-core Intel i5-5257U provides a fast and steady performance.

The 1280P offers a small advantage over the previous two, including two additional cores for productivity, additional threads, higher Turbo boost clock speeds, and smart caching. The Core i5 CPUs are also available in 16GB RAM variants with 512GB SSDs, which are fast enough to also do your video rendering, and you will need to pay just a bit more than what you paid for the i5-based Macbook Pros. Well, depending on which variant you go with, the i7 processor is fast enough to render your videos and edit them effortlessly while the i5 with a 4GB RAM and a 500GB HDD is not that efficient or powerful enough for editing or rendering videos and it would take you a long time. If you need a really nice daily carry, and all you are doing is writing documents, working with spreadsheets, putting together presentations, browsing the internet, watching streaming videos, and making a few videos out of shots that you took using an iPhone, Apples M2 chip gets you more than covered, whereas getting a laptop more powerful and thirsty with an Intel Core i5/i7 is not going to get things done any quicker.

The latest Core i7s on the desktop, especially, provide multiple cores and threads, and bump up frequencies beyond 5GHz. The latest i5 chips max out at 10 cores on desktops, and 12 on mobile, with a boost clock near 5GHz.

The differences between Intels core processor families are starker when looking at Core i3s (found mostly in low-end systems) or Core i9s (powerful CPUs used for content creation and other high-performance scenarios). These two CPUs are tuned for a maximum of about 45W, though it is possible to drop back down for battery life in the opposite direction.
