Check for problems with the headphone jack. The port will not recognise your headphones or speakers if it is covered with dust or fluff. To see if it helps, try blowing the dust off the jack and the port on your Mac. Holding the volume buttons at the same time, re-plug the headphones.

If you are just starting to experience problems with the headphone jack on a Macbook Pro, then this could be because the Macbook is trying to play the sound from the Macbook somewhere else. When booting up your MacBook Air/Pro, you might run into a few issues, such as the Mac will not play audio, or the Mac will not play sound through headphones. Sound may stop working in your MacBook at any moment, due to various reasons.

Headphones, speakers, and other devices can prevent sound from coming from the MacBooks speakers. If your MacBook is stuck in headphones mode, your 3.5mm port may be to blame. If you are experiencing a headphone mode problem with your MacOS, there is a chance the problem is caused by a microswitch in your audio port.

To repair your headphones mode, you will have to examine your 3.5mm port and plug in and out of headphones. Then, connect a pair of headphones by pressing and holding either volume button, and see if this fixes the issue. Try plugging your headphones in, and then removing them to see if that fixes the issue. Unplug the headphones, and then try connecting them to a different device, such as an iPhone or iPad, to verify they are working properly.

Try connecting headphones to another device, such as an iPhone or Android device. You should probably also try headphones to other devices around the house. Try using other speakers on the Mac, or connect the speakers to a different device, to check whether the issue is the sound ports on the Mac, or the speakers themselves.

Watch to know how to fix Mac headphones not working

For instance, if you plugged Mac into TV using HDMI, and are wondering why speakers connected to your Mac are not getting sound, that is because audio is being sent to TV.

If you are likely plugging a different speaker into your Macbook, or set of wireless headphones, make sure this is not the case. On devices that are powered by Bluetooth as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack, there can be interference between them, which could result in your headphones jack stopping working. Something else that you should check if the headphone jack is not working is the audio settings.

Some folks may be fine with audio cutting out when their headphone jack is detached; however, then, there is a problem with internal speakers blasting out the music. The easiest solution for this is to disconnect your headphones, and either tone it down or turn it off while audio is playing back through internal speakers. First, you will want to unplug the headphones and play some music through internal Mac speakers in order to confirm if headphones are unusable.

To solve this, you can leave a pair of headphones connected, and then tap on the “Output” tab to choose a speaker. If internal speakers are not showing on Mac, connect a set of headphones to your Mac, play a song or whatever sound, and then quit Mac.

If the ports are blocked, that will prevent Mac from playing audio via headphones. If your headphones or speakers connector shows the red light, that means that dust or debris is blocking your Macs sound ports. Dust or debris is enough to prevent the port from being able to recognise your headphones or speakers. Check your headphones port for dust and other small debris, then clean out any that are present, and then check whether this is an issue.

You will want to make sure your audio out is capable of finding your headphones, and they are also selected. Once you have done this, head into System Preferences — Sounds, and adjust settings under the “Output” section to show Audio as an output device. Before going into System Preferences, be sure the Display Cable is plugged into your laptops port correctly, and there are no headphones connected to the Audio Port. On MacBook, go to System Preferences — Bluetooth and make sure that Bluetooth is turned on. Look in the Devices list for your output device name.

If you would like to hear sound via headphones connected to the MacBook Air/Pro while your MacBooks screen is being streamed on your TV, you will have to click on the Audio icon on the menu bar to switch the speakers to headphones. If you want to play sound through speakers plugged into Mac when the image is playing back on TV screen, you should be able to change to the speakers by right-clicking on the audio icon on the menu bar at the top right of the Mac, and selecting Speakers from there.

To use the set of headphones with the 3.5mm connector on the MacBook Pro, you just have to connect the connector to the MacBook, and the MacBook Pro will begin playing sound through it. The headphone jack on the left-hand side of the MacBook Pro will accommodate just about any headphones with a mini-phono 3.5-inch connector. To plug in headphones containing 3.5mm plugs on an Apple MacBook or MacBook Pro, find the mini-jack for audio lines on the side of the computer, and insert your headphones plug into the jack. Connecting the microphone via your MacBook Airs USB port instead of its headphone jack is another way to let an external mic work independent of the built-in speakers.

Look at System Preferences: You could put something in the headphone jack, but route audio output somewhere else, like to your USB DAC. Now, open System Preferences > Sounds > Outputs, set your output device to be your headphone rig, and pull out your headphones. Your Mac probably has an internal microphone set to sound input, and headphones as audio output.

The easiest way to tell whether your headphones are really to blame is to connect them to another smartphone or media device and hear whether audio is playing back. There may be circumstances where you cannot seem to hear audio coming out of headphones connected to a headphone jack, or some static is interrupting the sound experience.

A busted earphone could also be a reason you cannot hear any audio coming out of the laptop. Sometimes, a bug in your headsets connector may make the laptop react like a headphones connected, when that is not the case, meaning that sound does not go out of your speakers. The red light on the jack indicates your MacOS is trying to make a connection to another optical device.

Why are my wired headphones not being detected?

A frequent problem with Windows 10 PCs is the failure of the computer to recognize your headphones. If your headset uses USB, malfunctioning USB ports, a Bluetooth connection error, a corrupt or outdated driver, or a problem with the headphones themselves could be to blame.

Why are my headphones plugged in but no sound?

Your headphones may not connect properly or play audio properly if you have outdated audio and Bluetooth drivers. You must update your drivers since Windows is updated to prevent any compatibility issues, such as headphones not working even though they are linked to your computer.
