How Long Before Airtag Alerts
The time before an AirTag alerts the user depends on the location of the AirTag. If the AirTag is within range of any device signed in to iCloud, it will be located quickly. However, if the AirTag is not in range of any known device, it will rely on the Find My network to determine its location.
Currently, users are alerted in an random time frame of between eight to 24 hours after they detect that they are traveling with an unidentified AirTag. Specifically, Apple says users will be notified earlier if an unknown AirTag is detected traveling with them. Because Apple believes that your home address is a critical location, you will get that alert in minutes after arriving home, rather than hours later.
In this scenario, Apple suggests looking at all your belongings to ensure that no AirTags are present, or waiting to see if you get another alert when moving from one place to another throughout the day. Apple says if you get that alert and cannot find the AirTag, it is possible that AirTag is no longer with you, but there are privacy features that may disguise an AirTag if you try to play the audio using the older alert. As stated above, the AirTag will begin chirping if it is separated from its paired iPhone or iPad for over 24 hours, regardless of whether it is simply lost or is actively tracking you.
If you do not have a smart phone, you can only tell when an AirTag is tracking you by listening for the beep sounds it makes when separated from the owners device for an extended period. Working means that, so long as the AirTag is in Bluetooth range of anyones iPhone (or other Apple device), it will be able to passively talk to them, then help you find them. When in Bluetooth range, a dot will show up on the Find My app, pointing you toward the Apples AirTags precise location. Yes, it is possible for someone to use an AirTag to monitor your location without you knowing, but Apple products will alert its users to the fact that they are being tracked by an AirTag within hours, and the AirTag itself will start making its presence known through noise over the course of 24 hours.
When setting up a new AirTag in the Find My App, users are warned via a pop-up message that Apples coin-sized Bluetooth tracker is not meant for tracking people.
Because the Apple-branded new AirTags for tracking require paired devices, an iCloud account, and an iPhone or iPad that is signed in to that account, anybody who is actively tracking you is also creating a trail of information stored on the phone, on the cell network, and elsewhere. All AirTag devices also carry serial numbers, which are linked to Apple IDs, meaning that someone who is being tracked can report their surveillance to law enforcement. Because AirTags periodically emit Bluetooth signals that can be picked up by Apple devices, a simple Bluetooth tracker for iOS or iPadOS can be used to scan the surrounding area to see if there is an AirTag around.
The companys AirTag Tracker uses Apples Find My Network, so nearby iPhones and iPads can capture its signals and broadcast them back to Apple, as well as its location. Apples Find My network is comprised of hundreds of millions of Apple products, all of which can work together to accurately determine an AirTags real-time location. AirTags continuously broadcast a Bluetooth signal, which is detected by nearby devices on the Apple Find My Network.

An AirTag provides its owner incredibly accurate, near-continuous positional information so long as it is located close to any other Apple device that has a Find My Network setting enabled on iOS 14.5, iPadOS 14.5, or macOS 11.3, Big Sur, or higher. People with Android phones, or other types of phones running Android, receive no notifications about whether they are being tracked by a nearby AirTag, though Apple says that Apple plans to release an app for Android later this year that would allow users to locate nearby AirTags separately from their owners. If Apple did, say, give people notifications after a certain time frame about Bluetooth IDs moving anywhere with them, then every AirTag separated from its owner on a bus, train, or plane could trigger an alert to dozens of iPhones, iPads, and, later in the year, Android phones.

Owners of iPhones running iOS 14.5 or higher should get a push alert any time an unfamiliar AirTag is near them for a long time and is not connected to its owner. Second, after an extended period of time that Apple calls an extended distance away from a pair iPhones or iPads, Apple has disclosed elsewhere that this is three days, the AirTag will emit a ping every time it is moved.
