Whenever you are searching something online, Google search is typically the first option that you choose. If you are using Google as your main search engine, Google automatically gives you suggestions in a drop-down box when you press on the search bar. Chances are, you have used Google search on your phone to search for something random, strange, frightening, or just plain embarrassing.

Every time you query Google Maps for directions, including simply looking up a quick address to see where something may be relative to your location, Google assumes that you may want to save this search forever. Unless you choose to opt-out, Google records lots of information about you, everything from where you have been to what you have searched for. Google does not know or care why you typed in the address; Google just records all of that information and stores it, so that if you want to, you can use it again.

Recording is not just some grand technological overreach: It can be a handy way of finding locations that you have been to in the past, or searched. Tracking can be helpful if you are trying to recall a place you have been or search for a particular location, but it also could raise concerns in terms of your privacy. While tracking can be helpful, it may be concerning for those who are concerned about their privacy to know that Google is recording their every movement.

Fortunately, you can opt out of sharing a particular route or the locations you visit with Google. Deletes can be useful if you do not want someone else to see the places you searched, or you want to get rid of old searches.

Along with that, you will not want anybody with access to your Android device to be able to see what you have searched. Keep in mind, it will show only searches that you made on Google, and not ones made on any other search engine. If you would like to see your recent searches, and chronologically, you should go to your My Activity page of your Google account.

You can scroll down to view the full history of searches, use a filter to view the search records of a particular time, or use the Search Your Activity search bar to look up a particular location from the search history in Google Maps. If you would like to revisit a location that you searched before, just tap anywhere on the search bar, and a list of your previous searches will pull up. As long as you have Google Web Activity Tracking enabled on your phone or laptop, all your previous searched locations will be at a handy location.

It is important to note that pausing your location history does not mean that your phone (and Google) does not know anymore where your phone is. It is also important to note that the deletion of this specific search or itinerary has no impact on history items from prior, identical searches or routes that you might have taken.

If you accidentally deleted your search history, you can still recover it by going to My Activity option on Google. If you would like to delete even more private data, you can also remove all your Google Search Activity from a Google Account, which includes Chrome browser history, YouTube searches, Google Maps history, and more. You can even take it one step further and clear all data from a Google account in order to erase records that Google keeps about you.

While the steps mentioned above may help make the experience feel more personal, you also have additional options to turn off or delete the Google Maps Timeline on both iPhone and Android devices.

Mobile users will have to go into the settings menu by opening Google Maps and pressing your profile icon > settings > map history. Every time Google Maps requests access to your location data, it will send it, whether or not you have enabled history recording settings. Under the “Google-wide controls” you will see “Location History” – click “See” and “Delete” activities under this section.
