If you are playing The Sims 4 on Windows or Mac, you can customise your game with Custom Content (CC) and Mods. Whether you are running on Windows or Mac, you can play The Sims 4 on the laptop that is best for you. Even though you can run The Sims 4 on a Macbook Air, Macbook Air is not a great machine for running it, and it is more likely that things would slow down if it had multiple installations. As far as users that have a Macbook Air from 2015 models up through the 2009 models, sadly, you cannot run The Sims 4 because it does not fulfill the games minimum system requirements. While meeting minimum requirements allows you to run The Sims 4 on a Mac, that does not mean that you will be able to run the game without any issues. You are more likely to encounter lag and a variety of graphics errors when running the game.
If you have your graphics settings on Low, and close any other programs and tasks running on your device, you should be able to launch The Sims 4, though it will not work very well. Just loading up the game does not slow the computer down, unless, like another posters observed, it starts running things constantly in the background.
