Here, we briefly outline the main options for each of your devices that may be used to turn off ad tracking. Limit ad tracking in Apple’s Settings > Privacy > Advertisement. While turning on restrict ad tracking on the iPhone does not prevent Apple from gathering information about your browsing habits, it does mean companies cannot show you targeted ads based on this information. When you turn off Ad Tracking, you are stopping advertisers from tracking and collecting data on you, but you will still see ads. To fully turn off ad tracking on Android, you need to also disable location-based ads. Since Apple does not make any concessions in terms of protecting users data, you are given the option of turning off ad tracking on the iPhone.

In addition to turning it off, you can turn off advertising tracking on your device, and turn off advertisers from including information about your device on their targeted services. Once you have disabled ad tracking on your smartphone, desktop, laptop, smart TV, and/or streaming device, the next step is to modify the unique advertising ID. Using this identifier, advertisers can track your surfing behavior and log how you interact with different apps.

As you may have guessed, most apps use tracking to serve up personalised ads to you. In addition to your usage patterns, custom ads are also served up according to your location data.

If you wish to opt out of personalized ads, you can click on the “Customized ads” toggle to disable this feature. Tap Reset ad ID to get to the toggle, and toggle the Disable personalized ads switch (as shown below). Wherever you find settings for restricting tracking of ads or data sharing, you are likely to also find an option for Reset ad ID.

It should be noted that you can always turn back ad tracking back on following the steps outlined above, but toggle relevant options by tapping on them, turning them green (for location-based tracking) and grey (for limited ad tracking). As far as your smart TV is concerned, you can look in its settings menu for options such as Advertisements or Advertisements to restrict ad tracking. On devices with Allow enabled, you can open your Settings app and navigate to Privacy > Advertising. Here, you will have to swipe left and tap Data and privacy, then you can swipe down and tap on Ad settings.

Select the Settings app, tap on Privacy, and then scroll down to the bottom and choose Apple Advertising (it will be at the very end of the list).

If you are not blocking ads, you will prefer to see personalised ads that can help with your purchase decisions. Do note, an option called “Ads” does not remove the Ads ID from your smartphone, since it simply disables the personalized ads. Having this option turns on limits, you guessed it, advertisers tracking of your iPhone, as well as prevents certain targeted ads from being displayed inside apps on your device.
