While Apple is currently heavily prepping the iPhone iOS 14.8 release, what is not yet clear is exactly what will make the upgrade. With this in mind, it is possible Apple could release the new iPhone software release numbers in tandem with the iOS 15 ones, with both versions receiving security updates, but only iOS 15 receiving any new features.
Earlier this year, Apple announced Apple plans to offer users the option to upgrade to iOS 15.1 once released, or to remain on iOS 14.8, but still receive major security updates. Apple is making changes to how it handles updates, which allows users to remain on its iPhone software longer, still receiving security updates. Rather than being a feature release, this update is mostly maintenance, fixing a series of security issues along the way. This is similar to how Apple handles macOS; you can update to iOS 15, or keep getting security updates to your older OS. It is important to note that Apple is only likely to keep providing these security updates to iOS 14.8 for a year; by the time iOS 16 is released, Apple is likely to let users remain on iOS 15, but will not continue supporting iOS 14, so this option allows users to remain safe for just a year, not using iOS 15.
The new OS would still be offered on any devices that can run it, but iOS 14 would still receive security updates, so that people are not left vulnerable simply because they are satisfied with iOS 14s performance and stability. There is even precedent for Apple keeping a previous version of an iOS version updated long-term, i.e., iOS 12, which received security updates for its entire lifespan, both through the iOS 13 and iOS 14. One of the reasons for this shift could have been due to an urban legend about Apple deliberately slowing down older phones running the newer versions of iOS in order to entice people to update their devices.
Such pressing security concerns would explain why we are seeing new updates to iOS only one day before Apples own event, at which Apple is expected to announce new phones, which may never be running iOS OS. Once Apple addresses these vulnerabilities with iOS 15, it is likely iOS 15 will be safer to use than iOS 14.8. iOS 14.8 and iPadOS 14.8 have addressed several major security vulnerabilities, and iPhone users are advised to download the iOS 14.8 update ASAP.
Apples iOS 14.8 arrived just ahead of the general availability of iOS 15 on Monday, September 20th (heres how to download iOS 15 and iPadOS 15), as well as the launch of Apples iPhone 13, the new iPad, and Apple Watch Series 7. The announcement is an unusual situation, both from an Apple-release perspective of iOS 14 being this many versions, since Apple has never hit version.8 with its iPhone software before, and from a timing perspective, since it is this close to a possible launch of iOS 15.
