Is A 2013 Macbook Pro Still Good
The 2020 launch of Big Sur is compatible with the following Macs: Early 2015 model MacBooks or later. 2013 model year or later MacBook Air variants. versions of MacBook Pro from 2013 or after. If you only need it for another five years or so, it’s still a great Mac and affordable.
Of all of the Apple computers — and others — that I own, the late-2013 MacBook Pro is the one that I have been able to hold onto for the longest. The biggest reason this is possible is that there are still some ways you can upgrade your MacBook Pro Late 2013. I am actually pretty glad there is a way to continue extending the life of this generation of MacBook Pros, because I seriously considered leaving Apple as my go-to portable PC because of the new generation MacBook Pros design, should I ever have a need for better performance.
If you can wait for the Apple CPU-based version of the 16-inch MacBook Pro, you should; it is almost certain to be more performant and have improved battery life, and will probably launch some time in 2021. The Apple MacBook Pro (16-inch) costs over double that of the MacBook Air, and is worth the investment only if you are editing massive photos and videos, plugging into a few 4K or 5K high-resolution monitors, or working in 3-D-draft software. Apples MacBook Pro (16-inch is still a great choice if you want an enormous 16-inch screen; if you need to run Windows apps on a Mac, and want the faster Intel CPUs you get in the MacBook; or if you want a laptop you can use with up to four external 4K monitors (the M1 MacBooks only work with one external monitor).
If you want a bit more horsepower, you can get an eight-core CPU, faster graphics, and up to 64GB of storage for $1 – four times more than you would get from the MacBook Air or M1 version of the 13-inch MacBook Pro. If you are on the fence, keep in mind you can get that same 10-core CPU in the M1 Pro and the M1 Max. Both the M1 Pro and the M1 Max feature CPUs that are a maximum of 10 cores, consisting of 8 Performance Cores and 2 Efficiency Cores (the 14-inch base model with the M1 Pro has an 8-core CPU).

The M1 Pro supports up to 2 displays running at 6K resolution at 60Hz, while the M1 Max offers support for up to 3 displays running at 6K resolution at 60Hz, in addition to a display running at 4K resolution at 60Hz. Another major advantage of the M1 Pro and M1 Max is support for external displays. HDMI and Thunderbolt video outs can power two additional external displays, with resolutions as high as 2560×1600 pixels (I set up the MacBook Pro with the 15-inch Retina Display smothered with two higher-resolution external displays, and it became a pretty powerful control hub).
The MacBook Air is a solid choice, too, traditionally leading our lists of the best MacBooks for students. However, it can be difficult to use for those students working in higher-end science, engineering, or content-creation applications. Even if your academics are not, the MacBook Pro can still serve you well in less tech-intensive fields, as long as you can find one used or refurbished at a fair price.
Plus, an even older MacBook is not going to play nice with the newest devices, and the repair costs could be higher. Fortunately, if you care about your PC, it should be good for years of solid use.

We would say five to eight years, but keep in mind you likely cannot replace every defective component on your Mac once more than five years has passed since Apple sold it the last time. Unfortunately, at some point, fixing your Mac or MacBook is not going to be a viable option anymore, and you are going to need to find a replacement. If it does not, then it is very likely that you are having issues related to aging hardware, and should think about upgrading your MacBook. While Apples computer hardware is designed to last for a very long time, at some point, you are going to have to say goodbye to your Mac.
While MacBooks may last quite a while, they do not last forever. While these computers are generally quite sturdy, you are bound to get some scratches, dents, some keycaps that are missing, and even cracks or chips in the screen after years and years of consistent use. In those cases, your MacBook is useless until you can either fix or replace it. Being outdated essentially means that if you are trying to repair a MacBook made from 2014, Apple is not going to supply the parts.
Depending on OS support, that cutoff is eight to 10 years — beyond that point, Apple will no longer be supporting the software, and that is probably the best time to just get a new Mac. By autumn of 2022, when Apple launches the next version of macOS, all these 2012 Macs will be out of software support. As mentioned above, although you will not be getting any kind of complete upgrade to macOS, you can still use the machine for some time to come just the way it is. In the long term, we think that the Apple M1 release is more likely to receive more new versions of macOS than the Intel release.
As long as you stick with the older MacBook models listed above, you should be able to find a MacBook that works with macOS 13 Ventura for your price. If you are having issues with your machine, you may wonder when it is time to get a new MacBook, or whether you should stick with your current one for a little while longer. Maybe you are ready to upgrade your MacBook, but you can live with any issues that you are having with it, and do not necessarily need to get a new one immediately. Because of my laptops current age, I cannot update the OS anymore with the latest version offered by Apple.

While Apple advertises my 2012 MacBook Pro (open in new tab) as the most modern Mac ever built, it shows its age, takes longer to boot, and also takes more time to even wake. My MacBook Pro is still usable for basic tasks and browsing, so 10 years of usage can be expected at the reduced capacity. If you like the idea of investing in a laptop with high-resolution display, and you can live without the optical drive (a concession that seems increasingly sensible by the day), the MacBook Pro, particularly in its 15-inch incarnation, remains a compellingly powerful, but also fairly portable, laptop. True power users are undoubtedly waiting for the $2,999-and-up Mac Pro desktop, due out in December 2013.
