Last Upgradable Macbook Pro
Not all models of Macbooks come with the upgradeable RAM option, especially the newer ones. The Macbooks from 2008 to 2011 (all models), the thirteen-inch Macbook Pro model from 2009 to 2012, and the fifteen and seventeen-inch models from 2008 to 2012 had upgradeable RAM options. So the last Macbook Pro with the said feature came in 2012.
While it is possible to upgrade every Mac Pro, you will have to search for the model number and the year of the Mac device to find out whether or not it is possible to add RAM to a MacBook Pro. Check the model of your Mac to see if you can add RAM before buying new RAM.
If you are buying a new Mac, set up with as much RAM as you need upfront. If you are thinking of buying a new Mac, think about what you are going to use it for, and it is best to go for as much RAM as you can afford. Since Apple has started making memory unupgradeable, your only practical option to add more RAM to your Mac is to pick it up at purchase time. Many newer Mac models cannot receive RAM upgrades, so you are stuck with whatever you chose when buying a new Mac.
If you are buying a new Mac, many models (like the MacBook Air) are upgradeable at purchase only – upgrading your RAM later will be impossible. The process of upgrading your Macs memory (RAM) depends on the version of your Mac: Some models, such as the MacBook Air, are impossible to upgrade RAM. All Mac Pro computers have user-upgradeable memory, meaning that you can upgrade RAM on any model of the Mac Pro. After checking to see if upgrading the RAM in a MacBook Pro is possible for the model you own, you will have to find your RAM modules by opening up the device from the bottom of the enclosure. If your model allows for a RAM upgrade, you will need to take off your computers back cover to access the memory modules and do the MacBook Ram upgrade. Unfortunately, not every MacBook or MacBook Pro allows for a RAM upgrade–it depends on your devices model and year. At OWC, for instance, you can choose your Macs model and year, and the site will suggest RAM upgrades that work. For the purposes of this article, we are going to stick with Macs that can get RAM upgrades without soldering. Ram upgrades are simple, a Mac SSD upgrade is a little more complicated, but with this guide, you will become a pro, knowing everything that goes into making the SSD upgrade simple.
To improve your productivity even more, you may consider upgrading your Mac to a SSD drive as well. The one most important drive that you will want to be able to upgrade is your hard drive, preferably to a solid-state drive (SSD). SSDs are significantly faster, more efficient, and provide better longevity than HDDs, meaning upgrading the MacBook Pro 13-inch HDD to a new SSD could make it feel nearly brand new. Not only does this expand the amount of storage available to you, it also significantly boosts the speed, particularly in older units with older HDD technologies.
It is frustrating that upgrading and fixing your own custom parts is not an option with the latest MacBook Pro 13, but assuming that you do end up with as much storage as you want, at least you will have options in terms of storage.

With older Macs, if users are unwilling to shell out money upfront for more RAM or more storage, there are options for upgrading these components later on, in various models. Over the years, this has become less of an option, and with the M1 Macs, this was considered to be impossible, since RAM and SSDs are soldered directly onto the M1 chip. In most other cases, Apple made it really easy for iMac users to do a DIY ram upgrade to their Macs at home.
It is possible to install RAM in 2010 through 2012 models of the Mac mini, but 2014 Mac minis feature a RAM that cannot be upgraded. Adding memory to a Mac Mini is easiest on models from 2010 to 2012, as 2014 models have no upgradeable RAM, while 2018 models are harder to mod. Upgrading the memory in 2018 Mac Minis is also possible, but is more complicated. For older models and Mac Pros, which are upgradable, simply follow the instructions we have laid out here, and you will get your Mac to perform better.
If speed and power are top priorities, the updated MacBook Pros deliver. If your workflow involves editing 4K video, rendering 3D graphics, or working in an app that changes the world, you will truly see the power in the updated MacBook Pros shine through. Assuming that performance differences between the 2022 13-inch MacBook Pro and the 2022 MacBook Air are roughly what they were in 2020, the 13-inch MacBook Pro is a good choice if you want the machine now, have to have the Apple Silicon M2 CPU, and cannot possibly wait for the MacBook Air to come out. Given what AppleInsider knows about Apples new 13-inch MacBook Pros evolution, and the realities of Apples Silicon M2 processors as they exist today, those drive speeds are roughly what we expected, and noticeably slower than those found on the 14-inch MacBook Pro and the Mac Studio. When you add RAM and additional storage to a 13-inch MacBook Pro today at Apples non-discounted prices, you are in egregious sales-price territory for the 14-inch MacBook Pro or Mac Studio, both of which have better cooling systems and better CPUs.

The last thing you want to happen when buying an upgrade of RAM in your Mac is get something that does not work, and that you cannot get back. This helps you to determine whether or not you will be able to even upgrade the RAM on your own, or even if it is at all. Use Apple support to check memory specifications and maximum RAM capacities for MacBook or MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, or Mac Pro. Newer 2016 MacBook Pro models with Retina Displays and Touch Bars are not easy to upgrade, since SSDs are soldered in.
