Macbook M3 Vs M5
The M3 is a dual-core processor with a base clock speed of 1.1GHz, while the M5 is a quad-core processor with a base clock speed of 2.2GHz. The M3 also has a lower thermal design power (TDP) of 4.5 watts, while the M5 has a TDP of 6 watts.
We reviewed Apples current MacBook 12 model (early 2016) back in April this year. On April 19, 2016, Apple Inc. updated the MacBook to include a Skylake Core M processor, Intel HD 515 graphics, faster memory, longer battery life, faster storage, and a new Rose Gold color. Although the name of this MacBook is identical to previous generations of the MacBooks earlier models, the new 12-inch Core M MacBook (early 2015) is an entirely different technological object from Apples first-generation MacBook. The new MacBook also features faster graphics, storage, and LED-backlit display than its predecessor.
The 12″ MacBook has been pretty consistent through all of its three generations, featuring the same thin, 2.03-pound chassis and high-resolution Retina display. Upon release, in 2017, MacBook models, MacBook was the absolute slimmest in the category, measuring 0.52 inches, although it was outweighed by many laptops this year. It has a similar look and feel as the MacBook Air, but is thinner and lighter, offering (at its launch) greater storage and memory, and a higher-resolution 2,304×1,440 Retina display, but lower CPU and graphics performance. It was equipped with the lowest-available CPU, an Intel Core M3-6Y30, clocked between 1.1 and 1.2GHz.
It uses the Broadwell Core M processor from Intel, which has a TDP of about 4.5 watts, allowing a fanless design, and a much smaller logic board compared to the MacBooks that came before it. In day-to-day multitasking and performance tests, the Core m3 model performed about as expected, being faster than previous-generation 12″ MacBooks, but still no match for anything running a standard U-series Core i5. This drive actually showed improved overall performance when put under heavier loads (not really designed to be a gaming or photo/video editing laptop), however, this is also not really a true Core i5 or i7 CPU. While Apples choice of using an Intel Core M3 chip may have sacrificed a bit of performance, it is excellent at keeping power consumption down, even with heavier loads.
The 2017 MacBook models Intel Core M3 CPU will power you through the workday, but its integrated graphics will never power you through a round of Battlefield 1. The 2015 Core M MacBook from Apples 12″ laptop features Intels 1.2GHz 14nm Core M processor, which has two separate compute cores in one single chip. Apples recently refreshed MacBook lineup runs either the Intel Core M3, M5 or M7 processor, depending on configuration (or whether you want to pay a bit extra). This new MacBook fits the bill if you want a fully-featured OS, can live without the minimum number of ports (one), and you need superportability.

Announced in March 2017, Apples second version of its new MacBook 12-inch laptop features a 1.2GHz, 14nm Core M2 Kaby Lake processor, featuring two separate compute cores on the same chip, integrated Intel HD 615 graphics processing units, 8GB of LPDDR3 onboard storage, and 256GB of flash storage. This is a significant point, as Dells XPS 13, which is equipped with Intels Core i7, is priced similarly to the MacBook models of 2017.

The $1,599 model has an Intel Core M5 processor clocked at 1.2GHz (up to 2.7GHz when turbo-boost is enabled) with 512GB of PCIe-Flash-based storage. The $1,299 standard entry-level model gets a 1.1GHz dual-core Intel Core m3 (with Turbo Boost to 2.2GHz if you need the extra speed) and 256GB of PCIe-flash based storage. The default is still an Intel Core m3, which is a low-power chip designed for thin devices that require a lot of battery life, but is not designed for extreme multitasking or high-end video editing.
Among Intel Macs, you will typically find CPUs that are dual-core, quad-core, six-core, eight-core, and 10 core, whereas the Mac Pro offers Xeon CPUs that are 8, 12, 16, 24, or 28-core. It should be noted that Apple offers the MacBook with a Core i5 configuration, although this is not the Core i5-7200U that you find in most Windows laptops.

Apple made this a hard sell, however, pricing the standard 13-inch MacBook Pro at the same starting price, while the new one was only $100 cheaper. A number of internal upgrades go a long way, though, and it should be easier to pick up a MacBook than a larger MacBook Pro or a severely outdated MacBook Air, which is still kicking. Ultimately, the mid-2017 Retina MacBook models are a substantial update from the earlier 2016 models, replacing them with major improvements to both performance and battery life.
