Macbook Pro 2008 Upgrade
To put it simply, Macbook Pro 2008 can be upgraded only under a few conditions. First, it should be the late 2008 model along with having an Intel Core 2 DUO CPUs. With these conditions being fulfilled, the 2008 Macbook Pro would be applicable or liable for an 8Gb upgrade.
Heres a look at the history of MacBook Pros, and how you can tell which upgrades you should be doing on a MacBook Pro. A large part of this tutorial (and others) uses terms like the Mac Pro 2008, Mac Pro 4,1, or Mac Pro 6,1 when it comes to determining which upgrades are viable.
Mac Pro firmware upgrades are now distributed as part of the Mac OS, and may be performed only if you are upgrading your Mac OS. A Mac Pro can be upgraded to the latest Firmware version and still be running older operating systems.
Apple has officially dropped support for the Mac Pro from 1-3,1 though it is possible (some) Mac Pros are jailbroken to run modern operating systems. Both 10.13 and 10.14 were pleasant surprises to 5,1 Mac Pro users, including a firmware update that enabled APFS support, as well as subsequent NVMe booting.
In April 2010, Apple updated its MacBook Pro line-up to incorporate new Intel CPUs and graphics chips. As with previous MacBook models in a Unibody design, Apple continued to use Intels Core 2 Duo processors, though with a slightly higher operating frequency.
Starting in October 2006, Apple updated 15-inch and 17-inch models to include Intels Core 2 Duo processors, 64-bit CPUs, making them good candidates for an upgrade. The 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pros introduced in spring and summer 2006 were Apples first professional-level laptops using Intel CPUs. The 15-inch and 17-inch models offered many options for upgrades, including some sanctioned by Apple as user-upgradeable, and some which were DIY projects Apple never intended users to undertake.
Because of 32-bit operations, you might consider upgrading to a newer model instead of upgrading this MacBook Pro model. MacBook Pro RAM upgrades and MacBook RAM upgrades are possible with just a few older models, and also all 17 models of the MacBook Pro.
While this might differ a bit in your case, the main MacBook RAM upgrade process is the same. The following sections show how RAM can be upgraded on various models of the Mac. You will see which Macs each type of RAM works on, as well as simple videos of how to swap out.

What you can do with Macs RAM depends on the exact model. Check the model of your Mac to see if you can add memory before buying new RAM. Basically, the more recent your Mac model is, the less likely it is you will be able to update the RAM on your Mac. Unfortunately, most current Macs will not let you upgrade your RAM on their own.
If you cannot upgrade the RAM, then try cleaning up the Mac in order to make the Mac run faster. Upgrading the RAM on a MacBook Pro, or any RAM, on your own is not risk-free. While it is possible to purchase used RAM for a MacBook Pro or other Mac, it is not likely that you would be covered with a warranty like this.

Not every kind of RAM works on every Mac, so it is important that you ensure that you are buying the right part. Due to the large amount of Mac models out there, we cannot provide precise details about the right RAM for each machine. As mentioned, we cannot cover instructions for every single model of the Mac.

Adding memory to a Mac Mini is easiest on models 2010 through 2012, as the 2014 models have no upgradeable RAM, while the 2018 models are hard to mod.
Like previous Unibody Mac models, upgrading RAM and HDDs on their MacBook Pros is straightforward. As with the other models, Apple has authorized upgrades for both memory and the replacement batteries for these MacBook Pros.

Apples support site has an extensive How to Install Memory on an Aluminum Unibody MacBook, which provides most of the information needed for upgrading stock memory, but not all. Upgrading the memory in 13-inch Unibody Aluminum MacBook models — Core 2 Duo 2.0 MacBook 13 (Unibody) and Core 2 Duo 2.4 13 (Unibody) — is not quite as straightforward as for earlier MacBook models, but it is easy nonetheless.
The MacBook Pro 2,2 can handle 3GB of RAM, as long as you put a single 2GB and one 1GB model. Only the 15-inch model can address up to 6 GB, if you use a single 4 GB module and one 2 GB module.
With our MacBook, two little clips either side of the RAM keep the RAM on the Mac. Gently push those toward the exterior of the RAM, and the sticks pop back out, allowing you to extract it. Once you have done that, you can start up the computer to verify that the computer is recognizing the Macs RAM properly. In most other cases, Apple has made upgrading your Macs RAM at home a really easy task for iMac users.
I have been using the same reliable late-2008 MacBook since, well, late 2008. We have had a few issues here and there, but it is still working quite well. Unlike the iPads and iPhones of yore, however, Apples 2008 aluminum-bodied MacBook is as fast as ever today.
The latest operating system that you can use on that machine is OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan, which is limited in terms of what kind of software you can run (no Logic Pro X). Except, I am sure you know by now…El Capitan is the most current OS that is compatible with that very trusty MacBook from late 2008. The cMac Pro (Classic Mac Pro) remains as Apples highest-water mark of pro computers, easily surpassing even G3/G4-era computers, allowing you to upgrade your CPU, GPU, and RAM very readily (thanks to its famous “flip-open” door design and processor daughter cards).
Can an older MacBook Pro be upgraded?
