Macbook Pro Ethernet Port
Most of the current MacBooks do not have an ethernet port built-in. If yours does not, you can buy an Ethernet adapter to plug into one of your Mac’s existing ports. However, the Mac Pro, iMac, and Mac mini range offer an ethernet port. But you have to check the on the side of your laptop.
You can hook up a MacBook Pro to an Ethernet network using either Thunderbolt or USB-C to Ethernet adapters. If earlier MacBooks had Ethernet ports, plug in standard RJ45 Ethernet cables into each one. If a Macs does not have built-in Ethernet ports, create the connection using either the USB Ethernet adapter or the Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter. In situations like this, if a wired Ethernet network is available, you can use your notebooks USB-A or USB-C ports and a USB-to-Gigabit Ethernet adapter to connect to it.
Plug the adapter into the USB port of your laptop, and use a Cat5e/6 Ethernet patch cable to connect the RJ45 end to your wired Ethernet network. Plug an Ethernet cable into a router or other device, and plug the other end straight into the MacBooks port. You place the Ethernet cable on one end, then plug the other end into one of the MacBook Pros USB-C ports.
You can buy an Ethernet-to-USB adapter if you need to connect the Ethernet cable into the MacBook. Once you connect the Ethernet cable into the Mac, you should immediately connect to your network, and the Internet, as long as your router has an Internet modem connected. If you are connecting in an office or classroom setting, chances are that you are running your Ethernet cable from the Mac into an Ethernet port on your wall or another fixture that, in turn, connects to your network. In either case, what is important is that you have the cable running from whatever your source of your network connection is into the ethernet port on your Mac.
Ethernet ports are not as common on computer systems as they used to be, and many Macs do not offer one anymore. With USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 being introduced in 2016 to the MacBook line, adding Ethernet and other ports to a computer is easier than ever.
Apple ships Apple Macs with Thunderbolt ports, which are compatible with USB-C. A new MacBook Pro comes with either two or three such ports, depending on which model you choose.
