Macbook Pro Speakers Quiet
If the MacBook speakers suddenly quiet, you should restart the computer or force quit all the applications. To fix the low volume, try resetting NVRAM/PRAM a couple of times. You can press ‘F10’ to see whether your speakers are active or not. When the icon displays waves emanating outward, your speakers are active.
Get a set of external speakers and connect them to your MacBooks headphone jack for better audio. If you want the best audio experience possible from a Mac, invest in an excellent speaker (or three). For a few great speaker options for the MacBook, consider checking out Amazon.
If you do not see any options for built-in speakers on MacBook, and you have dropped the MacBook lately, it is possible that the speakers are damaged, and getting them repaired is the only option. Your MacBook Pros speakers may be muted because you changed the volume settings, your speakers are damaged, your Mac needs a software upgrade, or you changed some other audio settings. The most common reasons why your MacBook speakers are so quiet are incorrect volume settings, loose hardware connections, apps that have overridden your settings, outdated OS versions, or your sound drivers may need a reboot. As you can see, there are all sorts of software and hardware issues that could cause the volume on your Mac to go too low, or go missing entirely.
Sometimes, a software app will re-set your Macs volume level. If you are experiencing problems while using a specific app, make sure that volume levels are not set to “Low” or “Mute” within the application, since different applications have their own volume settings for sound and/or video. If the problem is occurring only when using a particular app, you will have to look at individual settings on that application, as many apps like Safari or iTunes have their own dedicated volume controls which can be set differently than the system volume settings by default. Try playing sounds through a different app to determine whether your problem is really specific to that app or its settings.
If there is an output option that looks like it is for a software application, if you have it selected, it could be the reason sound is not working on your Mac. If you look at the Sound settings, you see USB devices selected instead of built-in speakers, and you cannot change that, unplug all USB devices from the Mac and try again. If there is not any software audio driver interfering with the Macs output, there is nothing connected to your headphone jack, USB, or Thunderbolt ports, and your sound is still failing, your next step is to reboot your sound controller.
If your software seems set up properly, and you have not experienced any issues with any external hardware or ports, you might need to reboot the Core Audio (which may also be called your audio controller). Make sure audio output is set to the right device, or opt for using the Macs internal speakers, to eliminate any other hardware issues. You might also want to backcheck your output settings to ensure that you are using the internal speakers on the Mac.
Under Output, select the built-in speakers option (contact Apple support if your MacBook Pro does not have this option). If the volume controls are not displayed in the menu bar, head into System Preferences, select Sounds, then select the Output tab, and select a Bluetooth speaker or headphones. Once your headphones or speakers are connected, click on the volume controls on the menu bar and select those.
Connect the headphones (or speakers) again, holding down either volume button. If you do not have an option to control the audio volume from your menu bar, and you want one, you can turn this on from this screen. If volume controls are not working on your Mac, whether using your keyboard or sliders in the menu bar or in System Preferences, you may find yourself stuck at muted.
To change volume on a Mac, click on Sound Control on the menu bar or the Control Center menu bar, and drag a slider to adjust the volume (or use Control Strip). You should try to adjust the Output Volume slider to the highest volume, and check whether that fixes the audio problem. In iTunes (your primary application for listening to videos or music), check your MacBooks volume levels, where the volume slider is located on top of the application.
Update the Macs system, and use an audio equalizer or a volume-boosting app such as Audio Hijack. If you do not have money to spend on new equipment, rebooting the software on a MacBook is a lot cheaper, and it is a good way to improve the sound. Resetting the MacBook Pros audio back to the default settings is a good idea, especially if you are looking to fix volume issues or selling the MacBook Pro to a friend. If you are experiencing issues with your Macs speakers volume, chances are, this is a software-related problem. For instance, if you plugged the Mac into the TV through HDMI, and are wondering why the speakers connected to your Mac are not getting audio, that is because audio is being sent to your TV. Sometimes, your Mac will route audio to your monitor, but then have no speakers from which to play. Without a digital audio out connected, you cannot adjust volume or listen to audio.
