The 13-inch MacBook Air, released in October 2018, includes many of the same engineering advantages found on the latest MacBook Pro models, including Touch ID, a Retina display, and larger Force Touch trackpad, and starts at $1,199, with the Intel Core i5 processor running at 1.6GHz, and Apple claims up to 12 hours of battery life. The recently announced models are powered by Intels eighth-generation Core CPUs, and are now available starting at $1,299 for the 7000 Series, $999 for the Latitude 7200 2-in-1, $819 for the 5000 Series, and $599 for the 3000 Series — an entire $400 cheaper than the budget-focused MacBook Air from the previous Apple generation, which used the fifth-generation Intel Core CPU.
The two laptops are fairly similar in size, with Apples updated MacBook Air measuring 11.97 inches by 8.46 inches, and Dells smaller, 11.63 inches by 7.84 inches. The laptops displays are similar in size, but they are not identical, with Apples MacBook Pro featuring an M1 display measuring 13.3 inches, while Dells new XPS 13 is a little larger at 13.4 inches. The two biggest differences are that only the XPS 13 offers the OLED display option, and it is also available in touch screen. For instance, Apples MacBook Airs 13.3-inch display is usable at a variety of different positions, something you do not get with Dell. The MacBooks Touch Bar, on the other hand, adapts to whatever application you are using, and displays whatever customized content you may want or need.
This makes the Touch Bar on a Mac much more useful than it is on a Windows PC. Instead, you get a Touch Bar, which Apple removed from the updated models. Apples updated MacBook Air uses Touch ID on its keyboard, and Dells fingerprint reader serves a similar function. Apple is a little larger, at 13.6 to the Dells 13.4, but there are many other differences to consider. Weight is a weird one, since configuration options on the Dell might slightly alter its weight. The XPS 13s somewhat larger screen, however, is possible within that slimmer frame thanks to its ultra-thin screen bezel, which makes the display feel slightly more spacious, and a lot more contemporary, compared to the MacBook Pros panel and its thicker borders.
The overall proximity of the Dell XPS 13 Plus to the appearance and performance of Apples updated MacBook Air does detract somewhat. They are extremely close in terms of dimensions and weight (and they are both incredibly lightweight laptops on a larger scale), but Dells XPS 13 is a smaller, lighter laptop, closer in terms of size and weight than even its own MacBook Air from 2020.
You might say the scores are not surprising in that regard, and it is natural for Dells machine to come out on top, but fair is fair: That XPS 13 setup is still $50 cheaper than our $1. For the sake of comparison, the latest MacBook Pro models incorporate the Touch Bar, not the Function Keys, and they start at $1,799 for the 2.3GHz quad-core in the 13-inch model, with the option to bump up to 2.7GHz for another $300. The new 14 MacBook Pro comes with Apples first-ever custom pro chip, plenty of ports for creators and professionals, the standard Function Row instead of the Touchbar, and a high-resolution webcam housed beneath the notch.
