Podcasts Stop Using Subscribe

How to Unsubscribe from a Podcast Using a Podcast App; Activate the Podcasts App. Visit a library. To view all the podcasts you are subscribed to, tap Shows. Choose the Podcast from which you wish to unsubscribe. Click on the three dots. Tap Unsubscribe. Your unsubscription will not be acknowledged.

Click on the podcast that interests you, then click on the subscribe button to order your subscription. You have got the Free Subscription, which requires little more than tapping on the + icon at the top right corner of a list of podcasts to sign up. There is one other way you can find podcasts that are subscriptions, and that is through Apples recommendations.

If this is the case, or if you simply want to view all of the different podcasts that you are subscribed to, you can manage your paid subscriptions for Apple Podcasts from your device. For now, it seems that you can choose only to listen to your subscribed shows, or channels, within Apples podcasts. Instead of subscribing to podcasts, users will now have the ability to subscribe to shows they are listening to.

According to reports, Apple Podcasts might be slightly late in making this switch, since platforms Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music, and Stitcher are already using the Follow button rather than the Subscribe one. Apple is making a minor, yet noticeable, change in how listeners can sign up to receive updates about new podcast content, as the company is changing the subscribe to follow in the Podcasts app on iOS 14.5.

After Apple formally made the change to Follow, it appears that YouTube and Google Podcasts will be the last titans of the podcasting industry that retain the Subscribe button. It is time for every podcasting app to follow the example set by Spotify, Stitcher, Apple, and Amazon with follow — and for every podcaster to follow Spotifys lead. Support your favorite podcasters, and in return, receive exclusive content, by subscribing to their shows, using Anchor and Spotify.

Podcasters will still be able to monetize their shows with ads, if they choose. While subscription shows will have to be uploaded via the backend of Apple Podcasts, normal podcast feeds will still be able to work through RSS. None of those individual feeds work well together, which is why the private Patreon RSS feed cannot be used to upload paid content automatically to Apple–each paid episode must be manually uploaded.

Apple says that the last addition will save creators time and energy, since creators will be able to authorize their hosting provider to push both their free and paid podcast episodes onto its Apple Podcasts service using the providers own dashboard. Because Apple Podcasts is capable of downloading shows on the devices of listeners, the app could eventually eat a large amount of the devices storage.

More importantly, once the user has selected his preferences, his Apple Podcasts service will then ask him to delete automatically downloaded episodes from his device, which no longer fit his new selected criteria. Other updates in iOS 15.4 for the app include being able to navigate shows by season, as well as filtering episodes by state, making it easier to find what users want to listen to.

From the Settings app on the iPhone and iPad, users will be able to browse podcasts, and then tap on Automatically Download to select how many episodes of the show are downloaded and saved on the device. To listen automatically to an episode following the one last played, tap on the Listen Now icon on the bottom of the screen, and then choose a podcast containing an episode that you want to hear. Once you have followed some podcasts you are interested in, tap the Library icon at the bottom of the screen and choose the Shows option to view all of them.

In the left-hand pane of the Library window, tapping on the Shows entry displays all your subscribed podcasts. You can then browse through all of the podcasts that you have subscribed to by clicking on the Library header and selecting Podcasts in the sidebar.

You also need the latest versions of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, or WatchOS in order to subscribe to any podcast. You will be able to listen to your podcasts on various Apple devices, like the HomePod Mini and the Apple Watch, as well as on the iPhone. You might have all of your favorite podcasts saved on a computer, but you will need to sync the devices in order to get them onto an iPhone or iPad.

Right now, the podcasts app is free, and Apple does not have any paid podcast content, but there are rumors Apple is working on a paid subscription service for podcasts, which will charge people for listening. Since podcast apps such as Apple Podcasts introduced paid podcast subscriptions, they also moved away from the term subscription, now using following. As reported by PodNews, Apple Podcasts is going to switch to using the word subscribe instead of follow due to negative connotations attached to the word subscribe which leads people to think subscribing to podcasts costs money.

Follow fits more in line with what most people are used to, but many apps are still using subscribe and subscribe is a term that is been around so long I doubt that it is going to go away from podcasts for good. Interestingly, the music streaming giant Spotify is already using follow to describe following.

With one notable exception, producers cannot directly publish on the podcast listening app; nor can listeners publish anything directly on the podcast listening app. Podcasters said that they were faced with an entirely new backend, which had a convoluted interface and frequently led to scenarios of user error, which caused them to pin to Apple Podcasts in a panic throughout the day – one podcasters entire show was apparently buried until Apple came to help and explained what was going on. Even now, post-launch, when you would expect the worst of the platforms problems have subsided, podcasters say they are still experiencing other tech issues, namely, significant delays in publishing new episodes.

Apple has also recently added support for uploading MP3 files to subscribers audio, as well as WAV and FLAC, tools for getting subscriptions started using Jump-Start, and new analytics about listener listening and following on Apple Podcasts Connect.

What happened to the Subscribe button on Apple Podcasts?

Listeners on Apple Podcasts will now be prompted to “follow” rather than “subscribe” to their favorite shows. The change reported by Podnews noted that the terminology was confusing to listeners, who hear “subscribe” and immediately think “not free.”

Are Podcasts free if you subscribe?

You may subscribe to, edit, delete, and discuss your podcast subscriptions in the Podcasts app. You can support the shows you enjoy by purchasing a paid subscription, which frequently comes with premium features, early access to new episodes, or ad-free listening.
