If software updates are not showing on Mac, there’s a possibility that the PLIST file is corrupted. You can use Search in the corner of the window to search for it if you don’t see it in System Settings or System Preferences. Shut Down and Restart to fix the issue.

If you use Apple Menu > About This Mac > Software Update to check for updates, and it says that no updates are available, that could mean there are not any updates available for the macOS version installed on your Mac, although the latest macOS has them. No updates available on your Mac is an issue that could have something to do with problems with your Internet connection, with the most recent macOS upgrade, or with a temporary error.

If the Internet connection is bad, it is possible your Mac will be hung while checking for updates. If the internet is down and nothing loads, your internet connection is likely to be a cause of the issue, and you will need to connect online before you can view, download, and install software updates on your Mac. It is usually recommended that you use cable Internet for performing major macOS updates and upgrades, but because most users do not have the means to hook up a Mac to the Internet like that, you should at least try using a more stable Wi-Fi network, unless you are absolutely sure that the issue is not the Internet.

Assuming that you are connected to the Internet, your Mac will check for any available system updates. Your Mac may check, download, and install different types of updates automatically. App updates and system updates will be downloaded and installed on your Mac automatically. Choosing install macOS updates or install application updates from Mac App Store will automatically install the system and application updates.

If you are having trouble downloading a point-based update (not a full-fledged new release) through Software Update or the Mac App Store, you may be able to use Apples web site instead. If you are trying to install point releases (patches updates between major versions of software), try downloading a Combo Update for the version of the software you want.

For example, if you are running macOS Catalina 10.15.5, Combo Update allows you to download macOS Catalina 10.15.7 without downloading 10.15.6. For instance, you could use the combo update to go straight from macOS 11 to macOS 11.4, skipping minor updates. The combo update contains everything needed to bring your Mac up to date with the latest macOS release, and can, in some cases, fix buggy updates. For instance, if your Mac is running macOS Big Sur 11.2, you could upgrade Big Sur to the latest Current release (as of right now, this release is Big Sur 11.6.3).

If the software upgrade function does not appear under the system preferences, then you should check for the current version of macOS running. If, after checking the macOS version page that you would like to install, it turns out your Mac is supported, but you still do not see it upgrading under System Preferences > Software Update, then you should try to manually download the macOS version that you would like to install on your Mac. If you want to install new macOS, but it says there are no updates available (upgrades), then it is likely your Mac is not supported.

If rebooting your Mac does not solve the issue, it may have software conflicts or some other issue preventing it from recognizing an update from Apples servers, or being able to install the updated version. It may be the case that the issue is temporary, perhaps because an update has been pulled from Apples servers, or Apples servers are extremely busy. They happen, particularly in the first few days when requests for updates overload Apples servers in macOS update releases.

It is unfortunate that when Apple releases a new macOS release, some Mac users will experience issues after an update, and those issues are generally concentrated on older Macs rather than on newer ones. As newer, more feature-rich MacOS updates come out, they cease to support older Macs which are just not powerful enough.
