The RAM and storage in the M1 Mac are upgradable once purchased, but they are not simple. It is possible to install RAM in Mac mini models from 2010 through 2012, but Mac minis from 2014 onwards feature storage you cannot upgrade. Reconnect everything, power on the MacBook Pro again, and go to About This Mac to confirm that the new RAM has been installed. If your Mac is running fine as is, you may not need to add any additional RAM. If you are thinking of buying a new Mac, think about what you are going to be using it for, and it is best to go with as much RAM as you can afford.

We purchased the base Mac Pro intending to do RAM upgrades after-the-fact using hardware from OWC, and our latest YouTube video shows us demonstrating RAM replacement, a simple process but one that nonetheless requires careful execution.

Since 2012, Apple has started soldering RAM onto the motherboard on each model of the MacBook Pro, so users cannot really upgrade RAM anymore. Apple has soldered RAM onto the motherboard on MacBook Air laptops in order to make the computers thinner.

Instead of having several RAM slots, as is common with most computers, the motherboard has just a single RAM chip, which is soldered on and stuck into place, making it impossible to change out or add additional memory once purchased. As we mentioned earlier, some Macs, especially MacBooks, have RAM that is soldered on, meaning that you cannot remove it, and you can actually damage the computer if you attempt. The base Mac Pro comes with 32 GB of 2,933MHz RAM, but the Mac Pro supports up to 1.5TB, with 12 DIMM slots in all.
