Why Does My Macbook Camera Look Grainy
A dirty lens can cause the image to appear blurry or fuzzy. Another possibility is that your camera settings are not optimal for the lighting conditions you’re in. Finally, it’s also possible that your camera’s sensor is simply not very good. it might be time to consider upgrading to a new one.
I suppose I have never paid much attention to the quality of the video, but I noticed a couple weeks ago that the pictures (or videos, I should say) from the FaceTime camera built into my MacBook Pro with Retina display were, bluntly put, terrible. Looking back on the problem, it seems that Apple simply failed to make a thin enough camera sensor for the new (and thinner) MacBook Pro with Retina Display. I started Googling around to see if it was a problem other people were having too, and came across a thread in Apples support forum basically confirming that Apple was shipping the Apple MacBook Pros with inferior quality camera sensors.
The 720p webcam is the same basic kind of camera that Apple has been installing on laptops for years, and it is not the first time that we have complained about this. According to just about every owner of a Studio Display, the webcams images are quite poor when compared with front-facing cameras in other Apple devices. The upgrade does not appear to have magically improved the quality of the built-in camera, and there is a reason why.
Models | Camera Quality |
MacBook Pros | 720p Camera Quality and Video Quality |
iMac | FaceTime HD camera, 1080p Quality |
MacBook Air | High Definition 720p Quality |
Unfortunately, regardless of what Apple does with regards to software updates, nothing is going to drastically improve the Studio Displays webcam. Shortly after the first Studio Display review critical of the built-in camera was published online, Apple told press that Apple was working on a software update that would improve the quality of images captured with the built-in camera. The reality is, even with the MacBooks M1s 720p camera, quality is still somewhat grainy. A great solution is to invest in a higher-quality webcam, which is photos will still look incredible, no matter how poor the webcam is.
The camera on the Macbook Pro or Air, or the Macbook Air, is typically 720p, not even Full HD, so do not expect a video of much higher quality. As a result, if your camera is good enough, then the videos you capture will show up in higher resolution. When using a high-quality camera, it is easy to create a high-definition video while holding a videoconference. The FaceTime HD Camera included in 2011 and later models of MacBook Pros and iMacs can produce high-definition 720p videos.
The iMac Pro, released in December 2017, introduced the new-generation FaceTime HD cameras, which now output 1080p video. Apples latest notebooks upgraded their webcams, Apple calls them FaceTime cameras, to 1080p, claiming significantly better colors and sharpness thanks to Apples incredible silicon imaging capabilities.
Based on the reports above, you may be able to enhance the webcam quality on the M1 Pro by shining a bit more light onto your face. According to Apple, the camera of MacBook Pro may appear grainy when it is low-light. After improving the lighting, you are still getting grainy zoom videos The issue might be in your webcams quality.
Without doing anything else, a better light source is going to be the biggest factor to improving your zoom video quality compared to the existing cam. After you have adjusted the lighting conditions, the next factor that you will want to take into consideration is your camera itself.

If you are using your DSLR or mirrorless camera as your webcam, you may want to adjust your aperture. If you have more than one camera (such as one on your laptop, and one in the separate webcam), or one microphone, you will want to be sure to select an appropriate setting. Once you have set up the equipment for your cameras, you can then go into settings that need more light in order to create brighter images, but not increase the amount of grain.
Depending on what camera hardware features you wish to adjust, you can use a webcam settings app to adjust the brightness, aperture, contrast, zoom, focus, backlight compensation, exposure time, and a lot of other things. You can use the Camera app instead of the apps listed above by going to your dock and opening it. While there are a few apps out there that let you tweak the settings on your Macs camera, one that we can definitely recommend is the Webcam Settings app, which costs $7.99 on the Mac App Store.
If you are using a webcam on your Mac, there is a way for you to adjust your cameras settings using the webcam settings app. If you are using a FaceTime camera on your Mac, you will not find any built-in system preferences for adjusting this. On the other hand, you can customize those camera settings as per your needs, as long as you are considering things such as accessibility of apps and privacy preferences. When you are looking at the camera quality and advanced setup, macOS does not have any built-in settings that you can adjust according to your needs.

You can also use third-party camera apps like Camera to capture images and record videos. Try using FaceTimes camera on more than one app: In addition to FaceTime, you could try iMovie or Photo Booth, for instance. Snap Camera is currently not available in FaceTime, but you can use it for video calls like Zoom and Teams. This is because built-in cameras have Centre Stage, a feature which uses machine learning to always centre an image of the person when video calling or video recording. You can also choose a different app that you downloaded from the Mac App Store, which you will know uses the camera.

Zoom, here are a few possible reasons why. Your internet connection is poor. Your computer’s graphics settings are set too low. Another reason can be that you’re trying to view the video on a small screen. One more possibility can be that the person you’re talking to is far away from their camera.
Why is macbook camera so bad?
One possibility is that Apple has designed the MacBook to be thinner and lighter, and the trade-off for this is that the camera is not as good as it could be. Another possibility is that Apple is prioritizing other features over the camera, such as the battery life or the overall design of the laptop.
