Apple’s year in review involves a review of its major products, services, and financial performance over the past year. This may include the release of new iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches, as well as updates to its operating systems and new features for its various services.

Apple Music and YouTube Music have both launched recent takes on this idea, and what was obvious earlier is more apparent now than ever: Year-in-review needs to be a yearly thing, a permanent shift in the relationships users have with the data companies gather about them.

Whether it is Spotify Wrapped, or even the new YouTube Music Year-In-Review, there are certainly plenty of users that like checking into their listening habits over the course of the year. As you may know, Spotify uses data to routinely serve up tons of personalized playlists and recommendations based on users listening habits. Spotify is the default streaming music service for most people, and Spotify has the most options when it comes to curated playlists from years past.

Apple does a year in review

As awesome as these services are for discovering new artists for us to explore, it is also a lot of fun revisiting old favorites at the end of every year. Apple Music is one of our favorite streaming music apps, and toward the end of every year, Apple lets users review the last year of their listening history through an Apple Music Replay experience. At the top, Apple Music Replay opens with the total number of songs listened to over the past year, followed by your five top songs from last year.

After tapping the Highlights Reel–or skipping that, tapping “Your Complete Replay”–users can view all of their music streaming years details. Replays now includes a Stories-like highlight reel, which shows you the activities you have been listening to so far in 2022.

The streaming services replay functionality has now been optimized for sharing on social media, meaning that Apple Music users will now get a complete experience when serving highlights to their followers on Instagram. Apple Music users can now share their Apple Replays of Apple Music highlights on social media, and unlike Spotifys Wrapped, Replays are tracked through Dec. 31, so you can see whether your tastes change all the way through the New Year. One feature that sets Replay apart from Spotifys Wrapped is that users can keep checking back on Replay through December 31, so they will see if their listening patterns have evolved ahead of 2023s launch.

Apples Replay, which comes bundled with Apple Music, also has new features including an Stories Highlight Reel, which shares statistics about how much you listened during the year. It also will let you know whether you were a Top 100 listener to any artist or music genre, similar to Spotifys Wrapped. It also includes your top stations, and it closes it out with a link to your Replay Music 2022 playlist, which is a compilation of your best songs from the year 2022. The Replay website shows you how many minutes of music you have been listening to so far in 2022, your top songs, your top artists, and your top genres.

Spotify (2022 Wrap) Spotifys Wrapped is the original creator of personalized end-of-year stories for listeners, and this is the version you are likely to see plastered across your Facebook wall or Twitter feed. It is also still the best-looking experience of streaming music services, available on both free and premium plans.

Since the replay function uses your replay history to search for your favorite songs, favorite artists, etc., it needs lots of replay data in order to deliver results. The feature is still not natively accessible in the Music app itself, but it is nice to know Apple Music is at least letting its users see their playback stats in a browser. Once opened, the streaming services playback function will show users their top playlists (including the total number of minutes played), along with favorite songs, albums, artists, and genres.

Apple Replay aggregates top songs in personalized playlists, basing the findings on Apple Musics listening history, number of plays of the song, artist, album, playlist, genre, and station, as well as time spent listening to these categories. Apple Replay by Apple Music gives Apple Music users a personalized recap of their yearly listening habits, including the biggest songs, artists, albums, and genres. Apple Music Replay is centred on their Replay Mix, a playlist featuring the users top 100 songs streamed over the course of the calendar year.

Apple Music Replay includes more data-heavy, sharing features, such as personalized highlights of the artists, songs, albums, genres, and overall minutes streamed. The revamped Replay experience launches ahead of Spotifys expected Wrapped 2022 release, and gives listeners a chance to review their years of music by spotlighting their favorite songs, artists, albums, and genres from the year.

Google is jumping on the “year in music” bandwagon, too, with YouTube Musics Recap 2022, which is available in the YouTube app — the main YouTube app — for the first time. Best-of-2022 lists and end-of-year retrospectives are coming soon, including Spotify Wrapped, a shiny interactive function from the streaming platform that is becoming a yearly tradition, taking social media by storm over the course of several days for the streaming platform. You can find and listen to a variety of Wrapped playlists from 2022, like Editors Picks, Top Streamed Tracks, and your very own activities from 2022, through either the web app or the desktop app.

To explore your own 2022 Wrapped in Apple Music, launch the web app and swipe through to view personalized statistics, like your favorite artists, songs, music videos, playlists, and more from the year 2022, as a sharingable tab. No matter what streaming music service you are using, there is a way to find and share (or not) your activity from 2022.

Spotify Wrapped shows the users best placements across various categories, such as songs and artists, in a highly-shareable map that goes viral each year across social media. The redesigned experience, which started getting attention from Apple Music subscribers on Twitter earlier today, puts a new Highlights reel feature front-and-center on the Replay web page, where users are encouraged to engage with it before diving deeper for deeper insight and expanded listening.

By the time the year-in-review feature rolls out in Apple Music Replay–typically around the first week of December–there is enough data available to represent accurately how the users taste in music has been over the course of a year.
