With the Apple TV Remote app, you can use your MacBook as a remote control for your Apple TV. You can also use mirror your Apple TV display. If you have an Apple TV 4K, you can control your TV’s settings and view 4K HDR content.

The Apple TV remote is automatically added to the Control Center of an iPhone or iPad when you set up the Apple TV using the device. If you do not see a Remote icon in the iPhones Control Center, you will need to manually add an Apple TV Control to your Control Center by going to Settings > Control Center.

Once you are viewing your Apple TVs Home Screen, press and hold the Menu and Volume Up buttons on your Siri Remote for five seconds. Hold the Remotes Menu and Volume Up buttons down until you see a prompt appear on the screen saying that you are pairing the remote. Once you have connected your Siri remote to a Mac, it no longer works with Apple TV. Lean back, plug in a Mac right from your Apple TV, and use the Siri remote to control it.

With built-in AirPlay mirroring in OS X, you cannot control a Mac computer, but using this app, you can, using your Siri remote, once you install Remote Buddy on your Mac and run the Remote Buddy Display app on their Apple TV. You are not limited to using AirPlay for mirroring the screen, you can easily control your Apple TV using the Remote feature of the Control Center as well. Apple wants you to update to iOS 12 or purchase the Siri Remote, but we found a couple workarounds so that you can still control your Apple TV using the app, and we will cover those below. With SiriMote, you can use the remote to control some of macOSs more popular apps, including iTunes. Once you install SiriMote on your Mac, you will be able to control your favorite macOS apps, including QuickTime, iTunes, Apple Keynote, Microsoft PowerPoint, and more. While not quite as complex as controlling on an iPhone or Siri remote, these ways of controlling the Mac for your Apple TV can still get the basics done.

All you have to do is pair your Mac to your Apple TV using the same methods mentioned for the Ezzi Keyboard App, and you can then use your Mac as your Bluetooth remote. Once you do that, you will be able to pair your Mac to your Apple TV and start using the Ezzi Keyboard as your remote. Go to Settings > Remotes & devices > Bluetooth, and choose your Mac under Other devices in the Apple TV. To control the Apple TV and configure a Wi-Fi connection, use the Macs virtual Bluetooth keyboard (Typeeto).

Similar to using the Bluetooth keyboard, you can use a gaming controller with a modern Apple TV to do more than just play games. Customize the Apple TV remotes shortcuts to do any task you want, including controlling your smart lights or opening up specific apps on your Apple TV. Make sure your Apple TV is identified in your Apple TV Remote, then tap on that to connect, then enter in the PIN displayed on the TV.

In the Apple TV app on your Mac, click the Remote button below Devices on the sidebar, and then enter your four-digit passcode. Now, your device can take commands from just one Apple Remote, and that remote will give commands only to your device. Apple offers a free Remote App for iOS devices (available from Apples app store), that allows for wireless controls over iTunes on Mac/Windows computers or Apple TV.

Using either Remote Buddy (from IOSPIRIT GmbH) or Mira (from Twisted Melon) Mira (from Twisted Melon), an external USB receiver can be connected, such as a Windows Media Center Edition eHome Receiver, and use an Apple Remote over those machines, with full support for sleep, pairing, low-battery, and controlling various Apple and third-party software. Using your Siri Remote with newer MacBook Air, Retina MacBook, or other Mac models that do not have a built-in IR receiver requires an USB-based infrared receiver and third-party third-party software.

Can I use my Apple TV remote with my Macbook Pro?

The 2015-released Siri Remote, which was made exclusively for the Apple TV with Siri always on, is a substitute for the standard Apple Remote. As long as you get the free SiriMote for Mac program from a third party, it will also function with macOS devices.
