Markup is a feature on the iPhone that allows you to add text, drawings, shapes, and other annotations to photos and images. With Markup, you can easily enhance and personalize your photos by adding notes, arrows, captions, or any other graphics you want.
You can use Markup to make an inline drawing right inside the Notes, and also markup photos added into the Notes. Using the Markup tools within the Photos app is easy, allowing you to add text to your photo, add shapes, and more. To use the markup tool, select a photo in your Photos app, and tap on the “Edit” button at the top-right.
In Photos, tap Edit to begin editing the photo, tap the More button in the top-right hand corner, then tap Markup on the Activity View that appears. You can either shoot a new photo, or tap the button at the top left to open the Photos gallery. Open the photo and tap on Edit, and then tap on the markup button at the top-right corner of the screen.
Find a photo and tap Select to add it to a new email. Double-tap on the body of an email and select Add document, insert photo or video, or scan document in the pop-up menu that appears. You can also tap within your email, then tap your cursor and select Insert Photo or Video, or Add Attachment.
Tap on the arrows until you see Insert Photo or Video, then choose that to take it to your photo library. Tap on either the Camera or Document buttons and choose which photos or PDFs you would like to Attach and Markup. Then tap on the Document, Photo, Attachment, or Scan Document buttons, depending on your preference.
Select a photo from the messages window, and tap “Markup” on the lower left. While you are in Markup, hit the Plus button, located at the bottom-right. In Markup, tap on the plus sign to bring up Text, Signature, Magnifier, and Opacity tools.
Select a Pen, Pencil, or Brush Type by tapping on the Markup icon, selecting the Color, and drawing away. Tap the Color Picker Circle to the right to select the color of your drawing tools (except for erasers).
In Photos, you can draw on top of existing photos using the markup tool, which lets you select different colors and drawing styles. You can use a Pen, Highlighter, and Pencil tools to draw or write over photos. If you would like handwritten text to appear on the pictures, you can write or draw using your fingers using a pen, marker, or pencil tools.
You can modify a picture using Markup before sending it by email, or create the drawing then and there and paste it in the message. With Markup, you can edit screenshots and photos, add signatures to PDFs or other documents, add text, and draw on images.
The Markup editor is accessible from within the Photos app on iPhone and iPad, allowing you to draw on photos, highlight certain areas with callouts, add text for funny captions, and more. You can draw on photos and videos within messages to have some spontaneous fun, and you can access the fuller Markup editor in the Photos app itself as well. You can also use the Markup function to modify a captured photo, image from Photos, a scanned document, or attachment from the iPhone or iCloud drive.
If performed inside of Messages, Markup is more transient, saving your changes only on the version of the picture sent to your contacts, rather than saving any changes on the version within Photos. If done within Photos, your markups remain as permanent additions to every photo in the app, which of course, can be reversed using the Revert option within each images Edit menu. You can always reverse the markups by tapping them once within the editing menu, so this is not necessarily a deal-breaker.
If you tap Done in the Photos app, you are returned to the primary editor, and can go back to markups with no changes applied–everything is still editable as long as you are not accepting an image change. If you are looking to make major changes to an edit you made on the photo, then tapping cancel is potentially faster, then jumping back to Markup to start again. You can also open the Photos app, choose the picture, tap edit, then tap the More (…) button.
You can choose to save a screenshot as a photo by tapping Save To Photos. Tap a Photo when in the Messaging, and then Tap the markup icon — use markup if needed, and tap Save — tap on the up-arrow blue icon to send.
In Messages, tap on the picture before sending to another person, and you can tap on the Markup link at the bottom-left to access the same tools. In Mail, press and hold on the image within the email message until an Activity view appears, and tap Markup and reply. You can also tap inside an emails body and choose the Markup button to create a new drawing and paste it into the email.
Draw, annotate, and use the other Markup features if you want, tapping on the add (+) button. The built-in Photos, Mail, Notes, Messages, Books, and Files apps allow you to annotate and draw on photos using the Markup tools. In addition to being able to add captions to photos, Markup tools can be used to sign PDF documents, and they even allow you to store multiple signatures for easy access.

Double-tap on the media (photo) of choice, then hit the “Markup” icon in the Formats panel on top of your keyboard. Tap on Eraser, and then drag your finger across the area you wish to remove.
What does it mean Markup a photo?
