Presidential alerts are emergency alert systems in the United States, used to provide the president with a means of communicating with the public during a national emergency. These alerts are sent out to all compatible wireless devices, including iPhones, within range of an active cell tower.
This article explains how to turn off emergency notification sounds on your iPhone, as well as how to disable government alerts (AMBER and emergency) and presidential alerts.

The first step is to enable emergency notifications on your phone. To do this, go to Settings > Notifications and select the Alerts option. You should see a toggle for Emergency Alerts. Make sure this switch is enabled so that you can receive government alerts and presidential alerts on your iPhone. However, there is an exception when it comes to AMBER alerts. If you want to receive AMBER alerts, you must turn emergency notification sounds on or off manually in order for these alerts to be received by your phone.
To do this, open the Settings app on your iPhone and select the Notifications page. On this page, you’ll see a toggle switch for Presidential Alerts. Toggle this switch to the ON position to start receiving government alerts about important news such as inclement weather and other emergency situations. You can also turn on other options like weather and AMBER alerts in the Alert Settings menu within the Settings app. After completing this step, you can select which alerts you want to receive notifications for by navigating back to the Notifications page from within the Settings app. This will allow you to decide which alert types are most important for you to receive notifications for.

Presidential Alerts for iPhone users can be enabled by going to the Settings app and finding the Notifications tab. From there you should tap on Wireless Emergency Alerts and then toggle on the Presidential Alerts switch. Android users should go to their settings app, access the Emergency Alerts pane, and then turn on Presidential Alerts. For Google devices, you will need to go into your Advanced Settings menu and in the Network tab you will find an option to enable or disable Presidential alerts. For LG phones, put your phone into its screen and head over to the Notifications section in Settings. Under Wireless Emergency Alerts you can turn on or off Presidential alerts as desired.
To toggle your side switch, turn your phone off and on again. When an active alert is issued you will hear an alert alarm and vibrations. To receive the alert, you must have your ringer volume turned on. You will only receive the alert in a designated cellular coverage area where the alert was issued, so if you leave your phone at home or are outside of the designated area, you will not receive it at that time. The message is typically sent out to all phones in the same area within about an hour of the initial broadcast so if you stay in the same area during that time and do not end your call or turn off your iphone then you should be able to receive it.
Presidential Alerts are used to issue alert warnings, public safety messages and emergency alerts in the event of imminent safety threats. The alert will show a message on the phone’s screen and will also cause it to vibrate or sound an alarm, similar to Amber Alerts. It is designed to look different from regular text messages and other notifications as it should have a distinct sound or vibration that is different from Amber Alerts. Unlike most other notifications, Presidential Alerts cannot be turned off, though you can still choose whether or not you would like your iPhone to vibrate for these kinds of messages.
Presidential Alerts are emergency notifications that coordinate emergency alerts and warnings from the National Weather Service, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrations (NOAA), and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Presidential Alerts are sent through IPAWS to all capable mobile phones connected to wireless providers participating in the program, as well as older phones that lack the capability to receive a 90-character version. The alert includes a 90-character version, and newer phones that can receive longer messages receive a 360-character version. Presidential Alerts are used for emergency alerts that require the public’s attention and provide life-saving information.
