Xel 3 Oled Background

The OLEDs main color array is organized into pixels of red, green, and blue, and these pixels are mounted directly onto the PCB. The thickness of the organic layer is adjusted to generate the strongest light for each of the colors–red, green, and blue–used in rendering a full-color image. Cambridge Display Technology made further advances with their organic polymers, and began working on a prototype of an OLED inkjet printer, which will deposit a red, green and blue composite micro-depositively onto a OLED substrate.

Sony went so far as to sell some of them the next year, but this was mostly a novelty object designed almost exclusively to demonstrate what was, at that point, genuinely novel OLED technology. It pioneered all of the slim TVs that followed, and for that reason, it really deserves a bit of respect.

We would like to also give a bit of praise to Sonys old XEL-1, announced way back in 2007, which featured a screen that, while very oddly designed, was only 3mm thick. Back in May 2007, Sony made public the video for the flexible 2.5-inch (6.4cm) OLED screen, which was just 0.3mm thick. OLED allows a sliver-thin panel to measure up to 3 mm thin itself, vanishingly shallow, and thin OLED prototypes — one even capable of being folded like a scroll — have been demonstrated.

Lightweight, Flexible Plastic Substrates OLED displays can be manufactured on flexible plastic substrates, leading to possible production of flexible OLEDs for other novel applications, such as roll-up displays embedded in fabrics or clothes. The flexibility of OLEDs has also led to developments in curved displays, such as virtual instrument clusters for cars. OLEDs require little power, and are by nature emissive displays, making them great candidates for use under strong ambient light.

Because OLED elements individually radiate light, which is displayed directly on screen, higher brightness levels are possible. An OLED can consume over 300% of power for the display of a white-background image, such as a document or a Web site. While an OLED will use about 40% the power of an LCD when displaying a mostly-black image, it will consume 60-80% the power of the LCD for most images.

The nature of OLED technology lends itself to extremely thin, light-weight designs, as well as the ability to be used in many different applications. OLED stands for Organic Light-Emitting Diode, and according to the company, its benefits include better contrast ratio, wider viewing angles, and better color reproduction. OLED technology offers faster response times, wider viewing angles, exceptional color reproduction, excellent contrast levels, and higher brightness.

An organic light-emitting diode (OLED or organic LED), also known as an organic electroluminescent diode (organic EL), is a type of light-emitting diode (LED) where the emitting electroluminescent layer is a film of organic compounds which emits light in response to electric current. Phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes utilize the principle of electrophosphorescence to convert the electrical energy in an OLED to light in a very efficient way, with such devices approaching 100% intrinsic quantum efficiency. Each individual OLED element is encased within a custom-made micro-cage -structure designed to significantly reduce interference from ambient light, which also works to enhance the overall colour contrast.

The only display we have seen come close to Sonys XEL-1 is the Plasma from Pioneers Extreme Contrast Concept, demonstrated at CES 2008, and we would expect to see OLED challenge this tech in future years for the honor of flat-panel king. Their OLED 40-inch TV is expected to also measure only 3mm thick, and to have a brightness that is 20 times greater than the current Plasma displays on the market. Its XEL-1 is a 1024×600-pixel 11-inch display, which is 3mm thick and uses the SM-OLED technology.

Sony created buzz by finally getting its XEL-1 on the market last fall, making it the first OLED TV available in a commercial setting. The 2009 Japan Display (possibly sponsored by Ronseal) had visitors rushing the Sony booth to check out a 21-inch set, leading some to speculate that this was most likely to be an XEL-2. LG has actually promised a more commercially viable version of this concept, with their OLED W7 model, which clocked in at an impressively impressive still-very-impressive 3.85mm, yet another record no-one else has been able to match.

Samsungs SDI unit, which also makes plasma displays, is all-in on OLED manufacturing in active matrix form, and had earlier laid out a target of Q4 2008 for starting OLED displays on the market, but now that target does not seem to hold. That has not stopped a number of companies from burning millions of dollars developing and pushing OLED displays. Fortunately for us all, top TV manufacturers around the world are making great efforts in finding out, particularly since OLED screens came into being.

Of all the display technologies developed during the late part of the 20th century, no one captured the imagination of the general public quite like OLED. We also hesitate to take Sonys XEL-1 as a referendum on OLEDs energy use overall, though we do not have any reason to question the companys claims. While we did indeed check Sonys XEL-1s power consumption, just like we do with each TV we review, the numbers in the Geek Box below are not very indicative of just how efficient OLEDs are. We are guessing that the problems are a companys implementation, rather than OLED technology as a whole, but there is really no way of telling, as the Sony XEL-1 is the only OLED TV we tested.

The Sony XEL-1 showed no motion blurring or bleed, even on challenging test materials, helping back up the companys claims about OLEDs quick response times. Unfortunately, Sony decided to cover the thin sliver-thin panel itself in a coating that reflects quite a bit of ambient light out of the room – it is to be hoped that future OLED sets will feature a screen with fewer reflections.

The hefty $2 may have been a small price to pay for early adopters, but it does reflect the lower production yields from the current OLED production processes. I have included optimized OLED loadouts — I have double-checked that these are True Black with a #000000 through Pixelmator Pro.

Which type of wallpaper is best for phone?

The key is to use patterns. Whatever your preference, it’s incredibly simple to find something with just a fast search. The best part is that a pattern won’t take up your lock or home screen, allowing you to easily see crucial information like alerts, apps, and the clock.
