If you have a Siri Remote, choose Allow. Click the red record button to start recording video. Press the keyboard shortcut Command-Shift-4 and move the cursor crosshair over the QuickTime Movie Recording window to capture an image of the Apple TV output on your desktop. Hit the space bar.
After taking screenshots with Apple TV using Mac, look at your desktop, then double-click on a screenshot to see it. Simply move the remote of your Apple TV around on the screen, and then capture screenshots with the Mac. To screenshot, just navigate to the spot on your Apple TV that you want to capture using the remote, as you would do any other time. The downside of taking is having to have the TV, but with Xcode, you just have to press a button to take the screenshot. You could use the Mac in older versions of the OS to capture screenshots from an Apple TV, but that requires a bit more work. Until Apple added Takes in tvOS, you had to use a Mac to take your Apple TV screenshots. Whether it is for work, or for something a little more fun, you can take screen shots and recordings of Apple TV using a Mac.
To capture screenshots or record videos playing back on an Apple TV, you will need your Mac connected to the same network as your Apple TV. Without an external device, you can record video showing your Macs screen, your iOS gadgets, or even the Apple TV. If you like, you can make a video showing what is playing on the Apple TV.
You should now see the Apple TV device streaming over to the Mac through QuickTime. You should now see Apple TV screen contents appear on your Mac under your Recording movie window. At the top of your QuickTime player screen, head over to File and choose New Movie Recording, which opens up a window on the Mac that shows live video from your Macs camera.

When the recording window opens, it automatically uses the camera on the Mac. Once that is done, click on the “Record” option in the screenshot toolbar (it now starts recording a selected part of your Mac itself).
On the Mac, hold Command+Shift and hit Number 5 (or head over to the LaunchPad, look for Screenshots, and open it). Simply move the cursor over to the QuickTime window and tap once to take the screenshot. You can take a full-screen screenshot on the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch by pressing a pair of buttons. There are different types of screenshots you can take, each with their own shortcut, regardless if you are using an iMac, MacBook, or Mac mini with an external display.
At least the normal pair of buttons on a remote, pressing which lets you take a screenshot of a photo on your screen, and then uploading it to iCloud, has yet to be invented by Apple. You cannot take a screenshot on Apple TV itself; at least, nobody has found that magical combination of buttons-pressed on the remote control that takes the picture off-screen and sends it to your iCloud Photo Library. Now, you can freely use the remote to navigate menus, and quickly snap a screenshot of your alleged Apple TV, either on a Mac or a MacBook, via a panel that pops up. If you are planning on taking screenshots of the so-called Apple TV frequently, you would better invest in a dedicated product and capture the screenshots via the QuickTime Player app.
For capture, you will need an Apple TV 4, as well as any Mac device (MacBook, MacBook Pro, iMac, MacMini) installed with Xcode to take screenshots, and QuickTime to record video from an Apple TV 4. After downloading Xcode (which, incidentally, weighs in at 4GB, taking the entire 9.5GB), you can plug in your alleged Apple TV into a Mac or MacBook, and capture screenshots through Xcode. If your Mac has macOS High Sierra or higher, and your Apple TV runs tvOS 11 or higher, then you can use your Mac to take a screenshot of an image on the Apple TV.

With the release of tvOS 11 and macOS High Sierra, making a screenshot of your Apple TV from a Mac has gotten easier. Starting from tvOS 11 and higher running on your fourth-generation Apple TV/Apple TV HD or an Apple 4K, and your Mac running macOS High Sierra 10.13 or higher, you can take screenshots from Apple TVs Apple TV wirelessly, and without installing any apps on your MacOS (even Xcode, or any app for that matter). It is now easier than at any point in recent memory to remotely capture or record a screenshot of Apple TV right from a Mac. You can now take a screen shot or grab a screen recording of your Apple TV wirelessly, as the Mac nowsees every Apple TV in your LAN.
Taking a screenshot or recording your Apple TVs screen using a Mac was possible previously, but had to be done via Apples gigabyte Xcode developer utility, and the TV had to be connected to the computer with either a USB cable or USB-C to USB cable. With the Apple TV 4th-gen, users were able to capture screen shots of the TVOS interface by connecting a new Apple TV 4K to a Mac through USB-C cables, then using Xcode to perform the screenshot.

Apple has given approaches for taking screen shots of the Mac, iOS, and the Apple TV; however, Apple has not made it easy for you to figure out a few ways of doing so. Remember, you cannot use the Macs keyboard and mouse (or trackpad) to move around Apple TV devices, rather, you pick up a Siri remote, then use Apples QuickTime Player app as the frame to place your shots. Move the pointer to the QuickTime Player window, wait for the QuickTime menus and the overlay with the Playback controls to go away, and click your mouse or trackpad to capture the screenshot of what is showing up on the Apple TV.
