If your messages are being saved in iCloud through an iCloud backup, then you will be able to download these messages, but only after you restore the phone from a backup. Whether you are looking to make a backup of your text messages, or simply want to read them more easily, transferring those messages from iPhone to Mac is a universal method. Messages on iCloud keeps both your IMessages and standard SMS synced across one of the best Macs and your iOS devices, and lets you download your messages when setting up a new device. Messages in iCloud, as its name suggests, stores your iMessages on Apples cloud servers instead of each of your individual devices, which has several benefits.
On Mac, head into your messaging app, click Messages, then Preferences > iMessage, and toggle Enable Messages on Apples iCloud system to sync messages across the mac and your other Apple devices. Once the Messages app is able to sync to other devices, all that is left is exporting your desired conversations. If you open up Messages on your iPhone after following this tutorial, chances are that at the bottom, you will see the “Upload your messages to iCloud” banner because you have just enabled iCloud sync, and messages should be uploaded to iCloud.
