Following the release of iOS 16.2, Apple has started developing iOS 16.3. On December 14, 2022, the developer beta was made available for testing. The release of the final version is anticipated for late January or early February. You will be sent to the download page after you have finished the sign-up procedure.
On the more popular Apple products, head over to Apples developer program downloads page, click Install profile for iOS 16.2 Beta 3, and click Allow. Go to the Downloads section (you will find it on the left-hand menu), scroll down to iOS 16 Beta, and tap Install Profile, then Accept. Hold the Option key, tap Check for updates, and select the software recovery iOS 16.2 beta 3 image that you just downloaded from the Apple developer page.
Once the profile is installed on the phone, you will be presented with an offer under Settings > General > Software Update to download the public iOS 16 beta. As iOS 16.3 Beta 2 is released through the air, you can install it by going into your Settings app, selecting General, and then selecting Software Update. While iOS 16 will not be officially released until months down the line, you can download iOS 16 Beta now to get an early look at all of the new features.
Apple has released the iOS 16 Beta 5 for developers, which, as usual, contains a variety of bug fixes and feature improvements. All the software updates Apple showed during WWDC 2022 last month, from macOS Ventura to WatchOS 9, are now live for the general public to test new features and ensure that things are ready for fall. Apple today launched the first public beta for its upcoming iOS 16 software update. It is exciting to get a taste of a new software release before everyone else, but it is time to get moving and install the official stable iOS 16 on your iPhone. If a software update is available for your device, it will appear there, and if you push the update you will then be downloading and installing the official iOS version.

With that second option, you are effectively upgrading from a beta to a public release version of that software. That said, this second option is especially useful if, say, you are running an iOS 16 Beta 5, and want to upgrade to a stock, public release version of iOS 16 as soon as that becomes available.
For instance, if you choose to play around with the new iOS 16.1 beta version, and want out, you can always downgrade back to the latest publicly available iOS release, which, as of writing, is iOS 15. With a stored backup of your iPhone, you can always go back to the previous version if things are not going according to plan. Without an archived backup, you cannot restore from the backup if you decide to revert back to iOS 15, because Apple does not support data recovery from new software updates.
Essentially, if you backup an iPhone running iOS 16, you will not be able to restore from that backup if you want to go back to iOS 15. If you decide you no longer want to use the iOS 16 beta, then you have to wipe the iPhone, and then restore your iPhone using the backups that you made previously.
Apple also advises backing up your iPhone data before installing any beta software, as betas can be buggy. Betas are not without their issues, so making sure to back up your iPhone is a must before you actually load the pre-release software. You will need to sign up first to the Apple beta software program, and then install the setup profile to make sure your iPhone knows to download the iOS 16 update.
Apples beta software program is a free service that is open to everyone with an Apple ID account, and allows you to try the software before it goes live for the general public. If you do not want to get the latest Developer Beta releases, you can sign up to the Apple Beta Software program and download a Public Beta whenever they are available, at no cost. To install the new public beta, go to Apples Beta Software program site, sign in with your Apple ID, and download a configuration profile for the device on which you wish to install the testing release.
The next screen will prompt if you would like to install the beta profile. Alright, now that you have registered your iPhone, it is time to install your profile for setup. Scroll down and tap on the “Download Profile” button. You will see a pop-up box pop up asking you whether or not you want to download a profile on your iPhone.
You will be asked to install software again–Apple really wants you to make sure that you want iOS 16 Public Beta to run on your iPhone–and then asked to reboot the iPhone to allow the profile configuration to install. Once you reboot your iPhone, open the Settings app and tap on General, followed by Software Update, just like normal with unbaked iPhone software updates. Whether you downloaded iOS 16 and do not want any more beta updates, or simply installed just a beta profile, rather than beta software itself, and now wish to delete that beta profile, you will find that leaving the beta testing program is easy.
The benefits to installing the beta version on an iPhone or iPad include getting access to new features ahead of the public, and who knows, you might discover a bug that helps Apple patch it before its full release in the fall. Registered developers can download iOS 16.3 and IPados 16.3 profiles from the Apple developer center, and after installation, the beta is available through over-the-air. The release means anyone with a compatible device — I have included the complete list of iPhone and iPad models that are iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 compatible at the bottom of this post — can install iOS 16 now.
Just over a month ago, at WWDC 22, Apple previewed, and then quickly released, the first Developer Betas for iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 to the iPhone and iPad. Public beta compatibility will be for the iPhone 8 models and above, and then these models can get access to iOS 16 when it is released.
The good news is you can either revert to a previous OS version, or simply get around the issue using Tenorshare ReiBoot, which can be used to repair any iOS 16 beta bugs on an iPhone or iPad. One of the new features coming to iPadOS 16.3 is the option to protect your Apple ID using physical security keys.

Should I update to 15.7 or 16?
As far as security is concerned, Sean Wright, a freelance security researcher, advises iPhone owners to update either iOS 15.7 or iOS 16. It is reasonable that some people want to wait until all the kinks have been worked out. You should ultimately upgrade to iOS 16, according to Wright.
