It is possible that Mail is not working on your iPhone because it is not connected to the Internet. If connectivity is not stable, you are going to run into issues like emails not updating in your inbox, or worse, Apple Mail suddenly shutting down. This makes the other Mail bug extremely difficult for Apple to solve, since it is related to messages in your personal account, rather than in the app itself.

The workaround for this issue at this time is to remove the spam from an account either on a device that is not running iOS 16, or via another email client. The only workaround is to access email using a browser or a desktop mail client, and to remove malicious email messages from your inbox or spam folder.
Once you have deleted an email from the account using a different device, a different email client, or online, Mail refreshes the inbox and stops the crashes. Once you have deleted any messages you believe are the reason for the mail apps crashes, go back to your iPad or iDevice, delete the email account, recreate it, and then, finally, check whether it is improved. Now that you have disabled one of your email accounts, head back into Apple Mail and see if it is working any better now. Moving emails into a subfolder within your IMAP email account will fix the inbox too, but if you go into that folder, Mail crashes again.
If the email ends up in your Spam folder, you may be OK…until you go looking in Apples iCloud Mail Junk folder. The message could even end up being classified as a spam inbox, and in that case, your Mail app will freeze whenever you check your spam inbox.
