Mac Double Click

The “double-click” on a Mac is a way to quickly open a file or folder. To do this, simply click twice on the item you want to open. The double-click can also be used to open applications. To do this, simply click on the application’s icon and then click twice.

Open your Safari browser, and in the menu bar, choose Safari, then click on Preferences…. Launch System Preferences from the Apple Menu, or click on it from the dock. Access Point and Click Mouse Settings from System Preferences.

While in the Point & Click tab, you can adjust your mouses tracking speed using a slider. Drag the slider to the right or left, depending on whether you want the speed of your mouse pointer to increase or decrease. Do the slowing by clicking and dragging the slider toward the slower setting, or hit Alt+D, and then use the left and right arrow keys to adjust the slider.

Click Trackpad options and adjust the slider to make your trackpad scroll faster or slower when you are reducing how quickly it scrolls through web pages or documents. You can adjust the rate at which the trackpad responds to your clicking and scrolling. You can make the trackpad act more like a touchscreen by turning on extra swipes and pinch gestures.

When you have the trackpad on a Mac, you can use a double-finger tap approach. The problem is that Apples mice share a lot of the same gestures that are used with trackpads.

Apples Magic Mouse might not have an obvious right-click button, but under that elegant white cover, it is capable of distinguishing left-click from right-click, just like the MacBooks trackpad. Now, you can achieve a right-click option by clicking either on the left or right of your trackpad or mouse.

Choose click from the left or click from the right depending on your preferences. You can select menu items at will, and you release key after clicking the options. Click OK or hit Enter to confirm the selection and leave the Mouse properties page.

If you would rather tap and click with your Trackpad, tick the checkbox that says Tap and Click. You might want to try looking up double-click velocity settings under System Preferences > Accessibility > Mouse and Trackpad. You might also find this setting adjusted within the Accessibility options, depending on the Mac version you have. From the Accessibility window, you can access the Additional Settings for changing your mouses scrolling speed. Click the double-click speed indicator panel to choose the mouse speed that is most comfortable for you, or click tab until a blue dot is highlighted on the double-click speed indicator panel, then use the left and right arrow keys to choose the speed.

Most Mac and Windows users will always leave mouse pointer timing/speed, as well as double-click or single-click, at the highest speeds. Some Mac users might experience an odd problem when trying to single-click on the mouse or trackpad, but instead the intended single-click is registered with double-click. Going forward, if you are still experiencing issues with incorrect double-clicks coming out of single-clicks, you might follow these instructions for fixing strange behavior on your Macs mouse and trackpad. If you noticed that your Mac was misregistering double-clicks as a click with the mouse or a single trackpad, keep reading to learn some ways to troubleshoot — and potentially solve — the issue.

Most Mac users are probably using laptops with no mice, and so they are trying to figure out how to use Apples trackpad, which has no obvious way of registering left-clicks or right-clicks — no wonder Mac users are not sure how to right-click MacBooks. If you are a novice at using a trackpad (rather than using a traditional mouse) or are not as fast-fingered as some, that is likely the reason.

If your trackpad seems perfectly fine except for the fact that you cannot double-click, then perhaps your systems timing for acknowledging the gesture is too short. If this is the case, then your system has been configured to ignore the input from your trackpad when detecting the mouse. The way to check a simple settings problem is to test a physical mouse that is connected to your system, whether via USB or Bluetooth. As long as you are running OS X 10.7 Mountain Lion or higher, you can modify this setting by going into System Preferences > Accessibility > Pointer Control, and unticking the box next to Ignore built-in trackpads when mice or wireless trackpads are present.

Years ago, Apple famously insisted a single-button mouse was the way to go, instead of the dual-button mouse preferred by Windows users — the legacy of this decision has been much confusion over how to right-click on the Mac. Some users unable to quickly double-click might not be able to take advantage of the more aggressive approach of the faster settings to fix this, sadly, but experimenting with different mouse dual-click speed settings should hopefully allow users to come up with a solution that works for them. That is all, after your Mac has been restored, reopen Safari and see if the issue resolution helped to fix the bug of having to double-click open everything on your Macs Safari.
