To play sound in Dolby Atmos in this situation, plug your Apple TV 4K into either the sound bar or AV receiver. Make sure to plug the 4K Apple TV directly into an HDMI input on the soundbar or Av Receiver. Connect your soundbar or Av Receiver using the HDMI Cable. If possible, you should use the other HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 port on your TV to connect the Apple TV 4K box. For tethering, simply take out an HDMI cable, or even an audio cable, and begin connecting it to the soundbar, Apple TV, and the TV screen.
You can connect your Polk Soundbar to an Apple TV using an HDMI cable or using Bluetooth. You can connect your soundbar to an Apple TV using Bluetooth, as you can with a lot of other speakers or Bluetooth devices overall. This cross-functionality makes the Apple HomePod Mini an excellent substitute for a soundbar. Unfortunately, you will not get a lot of the features of a new HomePod Mini like soundbars, unless it is paired to your Apple TV. While you can connect a few older HomePods as soundbars, the experience is a little buggy.
Without an Apple TV and AirPlay, you cannot get those speakers to work in Theater Mode. Apple TV HD, on the other hand, supports only 7.1-channel surround audio output. When set to Auto, Apple TV will decode sound (including Dolby Digital audio or Dolby Digital Plus) into PCM at multiple channels, and transmit it via HDMI.

The Apple TV is not a speaker, so it is never going to have the best sound quality, which is fine with high-quality content you might want to put on your Apple TV, such as 4K, HDR. The earlier Apple TVs supported both Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos sound (more on those below), so we would expect to see Apples speaker pack in both technologies.
An Apple soundbar may well be coming, merging the power of the Apple TV with the impressive sound handling and voice controls of the HomePod. Of course, it will be interesting to see whether Apples soundbar is the size of the Roku Streambar, or something larger, such as a Sonos Beam (Gen 2), or even the Sonos Arc. Then again, appetites for increasingly larger TV screens may mean that we will see an oversized Apple soundbar loaded up with drivers to deliver a cinematic experience.
As far as immersive, object-based, 3D sound, Apples current TV set-top 4K already supports Dolby Atmos, so it seems possible an Apple soundbar would boast upward-firing drivers, and therefore be Dolby Atmos. If you own Apple TV soundbars that feature Dolby Atmos, that means that you will enjoy better audio and performance with stronger Internet connectivity.

Many TVs do not support Dolby Atmos pass-through to various soundbars so connect your Apple TV to the HDMI port of your soundbar or AV receiver using an HDMI cable. You can plug one end of an HDMI cable into the HDMI port on your TV, and the other end should be plugged into the HDMI port on your soundbar.
